5.31.2016 - Starting on the dormer roof!

Jim worked on more scaffolding this morning - went up even higher.

He did more flashing work on the roof connections too and made another piece of drip edge.  Then he made the first trim board for the back.

Cutting the trim board for the dormer side...

All primed and waiting to dry!

While paint was drying, Jim put up more scaffolding.  He brought up the frames to the apartment and then took them out the big window.

Whew...getting scary, scary high!

Once the paint dried, Jim installed the trim board.

Time for a little touch up of all the primed parts!

Jim then brought up the drip edge...

Installing the drip edge...

These first few rows on the dormer roof are among the scariest things that Jim has to do.  So he moved his hook to attach the rope for his harness.

Starting to measure and mark lines for the first courses...

This is why this is so scary...Jim has to work facing downwards with the ground 30' underneath him!  He can't get the same look to get things lined up perfectly, he needs more hands to help hold everything - it's all just hard.

For a few feet, he's able to work off the scaffolding which makes life better.

But then it's back to working upside down.

Pictures of the progress on this roof are going to be tough - there aren't a lot of good angles for pictures.  Jim took this one as he was getting off the roof for the day.  What's really scary is that this view of the scaffolding is as Jim sees it from working on the roof.  If you look at the previous pictures, you see how high that scaffolding tower really is!

  1. Thank you for the great DIY tips! We have an older home and my husband is out-of-town on business quite often. It leaves me concerned when we have storms with high winds and ice that he is unable to check for damage sometimes weeks afterwards. Now I know what to look for and don't have to wait!
