11.30.2023

Mom and I were gone almost all day - it was so nice having my car back and I took full advantage of it!  We started out at FedEx, returning the old calipers so that we can get our core charge back.  Mom had two doctor appointments - one late morning and one in the afternoon.  So in between we did pickups and grocery store errands.

Jim pulled the chipper into the auto bay now that my car is out.  He got the oil changed and continued to work on the belt.

Plus, Jim spent a ton of time taking the fall tubs out into the pole barn attic, and bringing down the Christmas ones.  Then he started bringing up all my Christmas dish tubs - he definitely got a work out going up and down stairs today!

Not too many pictures today, but an important one.  Jim got my car all done and buttoned up and took it out for a test drive!

11.28.2023

We had some divine intervention this morning - about 10:00, our doorbell alert went off and we saw the gas truck pull up!  He was able to fill it up completely and we now have 900 gallons of propane.  Thanks to Jim's driveway work yesterday, the driver said he had no issues getting up.  It was perfect timing - we got probably another inch of snow this afternoon along with really cold temperatures, so the condition of the driveway was only going to get worse.  So relieved to have this task done!

Jim went back to car work today - he got the driver side inner and outer hoses replaced.  This side was harder because he had that rusty pan to work around.  His Japanese supplier couldn't get it so he ordered it from another source.  However, they contacted him later and said it would be 10-12 weeks before it would ship.  Oh well, it's nothing crucial.

Once Jim got all that done, I did the inside car work while he bled the air out of the brake lines.  Then it was time for my winter tires to go on...

While it was up on the lift, Jim sprayed the protective film in areas to try and ward off corrosion...

Jim just has to put the inside console back together and make sure the tires are at the right pressure, then it will be ready for a test drive!

11.27.2023

We woke up to a couple inches of snow this morning.  It really wasn't forecast and, of course, Jim had put in a gas delivery order over the weekend.  We had an early package delivery and it wasn't our usual mail person so they tried to come up the driveway and couldn't.  They ended up making some big ruts in the driveway.  Jim had to go out in the afternoon and try to fix it.  It had warmed up a bit and the snow compacted, so once it gets cold over the next couple days, it could be messy.  We have plenty of gas, so there's no panic to get it.  Hopefully they'll come on a good day.

The morning package delivery did bring the car parts Jim was waiting for, so this afternoon he was able to get both the inner and outer hoses on the back passenger side.

The tie rods are something that Jim wants to replace maybe next year, but while he was buying parts, he bought those too...

11.26.2023

Jim spent his day in the auto bay today - first, working on the chipper...

Putting the new belt on...

Jim took the chipper outside and started it.  It started right up and ran great.  For now, it's back in the pole barn lean to.

Then he turned his attention back to my car.  This really rusty cover is something that Jim has been looking for forever.  Using the shop manual he bought, he finally found the part number and then was able to find a source for the part.  He's going to do some investigating, but will order a new one.  He wasn't sure if he could get these horribly rusty bolts out, but he finally managed to.

Then the really good news is that Jim was able to get the inner hose assembly off and won't have to remake brake line!  He actually has one side connected and the other about ready to go.  Then it will just be waiting for the outer hoses to come in.

11.25.2023

Jim got everything arranged in the auto bay - amazing that we can get 4 cars in here plus the treadmill and everything else!  He still has to hook up the trickle charger, get it covered, and move the tarp back for protection.

Jim got the emergency brake cables hooked up to the back brakes, but he's doing some serious debating about hoses.  He's waiting on one order to replace the ones that were the wrong size, but there's also an inner hose that is badly corroded and hard to access.  He may have to make a new brake line if he decides to replace those.

He got new spark plugs in...

11.24.2023

Jim was in repair mode today - he first finished packing up the old calipers to be returned.

The treadmill was really squeaking so Jim did some investigation.  He found one screw in the shock absorber on the deck that had been screwed into the rubber instead of the right hole, and he's hoping that will stop the squeaking.  He'll see when he runs this evening.

He started the process of putting the MINI up on the car dollies.  He'll have to rearrange everything and hook it up to the trickle charger.  My mom came down for a look...

11.23.2023

Hope everyone had the most wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends!  We started the day with cinnamon rolls and Winter Solstice playing - a family tradition.

Jim went down to work on the car some - here he's measuring bolts to get right threads and sizes to order new ones...

The emergency brake connection on the rear brakes continued to be a struggle - Jim ended up opening up the brake assembly inside the car to loosen it up so that he was able to make the connection on the brakes...

This side is all hooked up now...

Then it was time for turkey dinner!  Jim did a great job carving...

Time to eat!

Then it was back to work.  My food scale - which I use constantly - broke and Jim took it apart to see if it could be fixed.  It would require parts and it wouldn't be worth it, so a new one is on its way.

Jim has to pack up and return all the old calipers to get the core charge back, so he worked on that...

11.22.2023

We had our first measurable snowfall beginning last night through this morning.  Here's a picture from the security camera last night...

And this morning's view...  We probably had 5" before the snow changed into rain and just compacted it.

Jim went back to work on my brakes today - this side is about done...

He got a new torque wrench and it's very cool - you set the torque you want and it beeps when it gets there!

Jim continues to run into more corrosion on the back brakes.  He has a list of new bolts he wants to get.  One set of new hoses he bought didn't fit, and he would like to replace the emergency brake cable down the road.  Getting ready to pack the calibers on the last wheel...

Mom and I did some Thanksgiving meal prep today, including making pies.  A good snowy day!

11.21.2023

We are forecast to get our first measurable snow of the season tonight through tomorrow.  So Jim took the MINI for its final outing of the year this morning.  He got it filled up with gas and he'll be putting it up on dollies soon and rearranging the auto bay.

Then it was back to work on the car.  Check out all the parts for the calipers - yikes!  It took Jim awhile to be able to get the brake pads in with all those clips, but he finally figured out a less frustrating way to do it.

Pads in and looking good!

Working on the front driver side...

This is all hooked up with new hoses and parts...

Jim's running into more corrosion issues on the back brakes, which makes the job hard.

11.20.2023

Jim continued working on the chipper today...

Putting it back together...

He has a new drive belt on order and wants to change the oil, but it's done for now and tucked away in the auto bay...

So now it's time for my car to go on the lift for a complete brake job!

Jim is marking wheel location on a piece of tape on each one, so that he'll be able to rotate them when they go back on in the spring.  He'll be putting my winter wheels on when he's done with the brakes.

Comparing new and old brake calipers...

Bleeding brake fluid...

Showing my mom the old rotors...
