7.31.2019

Hard to believe that another month has gone by...which is why poor Jim's before winter to do list seems much longer than is possible to complete!  But he personifies the word perseverance!

Jim continued to have his metal working hat on today.  He cut more rafters and the pieces that will attach to the roof...

Continuing to make more pieces...

Cutting out the angels on the rafter...

He even got the tail clips attached to the rafters!

He also cut two pieces of steel to use as shelving in the pole barn attic.  He got them cut to fit against the sheathing and even punched all the holes for attaching.

Jim had to knock off a bit early today and meet a person for another Craigslist sale.  He met the guy halfway so he had to drive about 20 minutes - but it was one of those "worth it" sales!

I encountered a traffic jam on the way to the post office this morning!

7.30.2019

Jim finished building the scaffolding tower this morning and then added a plank so he can get from the tower to the roof.

Jim cut and is rounding over the steel angle pieces he'll use for the Corian work space.

Then he started working on the first dormer rafter piece...

All drawn out on the steel...

First rafter cut...

Next Jim got the piece of steel cut that will attach to the stairwell roof...

7.29.2019

Jim ordered some angle pieces from Albany Steel - they come very early in the morning so Jim was down there to take delivery.  He's going to use some of this to make a flat workspace for the Corian and some in the pole barn for more storage.

Jim's trimmer parts came in so he took the carburetor apart and then put things back together.

He made more custom flashing for the top of the stairwell overhang roof...

Working on installing the flashing...

The flashing is installed on both sides now.

He made the freeze board pieces that will go on top of the flashing on either side of the overhang roof.  He had to remember the techniques he used to install all these pieces - it's been a couple years now.  Unfortunately, he was out of the trim screws he needed - I'll pick those up tomorrow morning.

Since the overhang section is about done, Jim is getting ready for the next step - building the dormer on the stairwell roof.  He needs to set up another section of scaffolding...

However, the rest of the scaffolding pieces were nicely put away in our little shed.  Of course, they were small sections to the large ones so Jim had to take all the smaller sections out to get to the ones he needed.

Then he started building the sections...

He stopped on that project so he could use the newly-fixed trimmer for an hour or so before he called it a day.

7.28.2019

Jim went back to work on the soffit for the overhang on the stairwell.  He had to figure out the placement for the lights and used his compass to draw a circle.

Going over the line with marker so it's easier to see through all the sawdust...

Cutting out the hole...

All done!

Now it's time to place it...

Fastening it in place...

Then he had to make the side pieces...

Putting them in place...

He lowered the light housing so that we can get a cover and trim ring for these lights.  Next step was to finish the trim work at the top of the door (you can see the 'before' in the picture above).

He first put a spacer piece in...

Then made a piece to go over the top...

Once he had it sized, time to predrill...

The door surround area is all done!  It will need some caulking and touch up paint at some point but it looks so finished now!

Jim had to knock off a few minutes early and meet someone for another Craigslist sale.  Whenever possible, he likes to meet away from Angel for security reasons.

7.27.2019

This morning, Jim met someone for a Craigslist sale - they met at the church in Greenfield.  All went well - one more thing out of here that we don't need.

Jim moved the scaffolding out of the way that was in the back and did a little more cleaning and grading.  He also worked on the upper driveway a bit - he wants to get some more gravel in this section this week.

Then he put down some grass seed to see if we can get some cover here...

Back dragging with the Bobcat to incorporate the seed...

Then he set up a section of scaffolding by the stairwell - time to start some work here!

The first step is to do the soffit on the overhang.  This is more complicated since there are two lights to work around with the cuts in the soffit as well.  But Jim got it figured out and sized.  Cutting out the holes for the lights will be next.

Off to church...

7.26.2019

Jim still may not have enough clamps, but his order of spring clamps came in so he now has 20 of them to use for the Corian!

Today, Jim continued work on the soffit.  So it went from this piece...

To looking great!  Jim replaced that section with a solid piece.

Last section all in place!  Jim has to do some moldings around the outside edges but everything is basically finished.  No squirrels allowed!

Next, Jim worked on the knee braces.  They have been in place but not fastened.  He drilled out holes...

Then used a really long bit to drill through the hole into the brace...

Then used a 6" screw to fasten.

Next Jim plugged the hole with a peg.

A little primer will do until he gets it painted.

He put the hinges on the man door of the pole barn...

Then set the door in place...

He already had a door set he planned to use but this door is more commercial - he tried but it just won't work so we'll have to get a new one.
