Jim again worked insulation in the morning and early afternoon - the back wall of the woodshop is filling up!

The bathroom wall is all finished - this was a tricky one so Jim is glad to have this done.

Continuing on in the bathroom, he got the ceiling piece done - another tricky piece because this is where all the wires were.

He started doing a little bit of the wall cavities between the living room and bathroom to see how that would go.  These are smaller studs because of the double wall but Jim has a good plan for this now too.

He even started putting the more dense insulation at the top of the living room walls where it meets the attic space...

Then in the afternoon, it was back outside.  Putting up the front freeze board...

Freeze boards are done - the overhang is really taking shape!

The siding job next to the knee braces is really tough - almost every piece has to be cut, caulked or both.  Here Jim is cutting the pieces to go around the knee brace.

Starting to attach siding...

Making good progress...

Working on the other side too - this space is very narrow so it really requires a lot of cutting and caulking!

This is a picture of the back that Jim painted yesterday...he concentrated on the right side section because hopefully that scaffolding will be able to come down soon!

This morning, he got more insulation in the wood shop done and even hung the clock back up!

Then it was back to work on the knee braces.  He got the other one up this afternoon...

Attaching the lag bolts to hold everything secure...

Working underneath the overhang again!

Ta da!  Both knee braces are up!  Really love the way it looks!

Then onto the finishing work.  He put the flashing up next to the knee brace...

,,,and next to the corner trim to get ready for siding.

He had to make a special little piece of flashing to go next to the overhang tucked up tight.

Putting on the first piece of freeze board...

Making the other side...

Attaching....

Finally the front freeze board is made and Jim is predrilling it.  However, it needed to be trimmed a bit because of the different slope on the front roof edge so Jim got all that cut and primed.  We'll put it up tomorrow!

7.29.2017

Another gorgeous day here in upstate New York - the temperatures couldn't be any more perfect!

Jim worked on insulating a couple more cavities in the woodshop...

He also put the extra stud in the bathroom wall, put up the clip angles and rigid foam and even got some fiberglass up.

But the day was mostly about knee braces!  Unfortunately, Jim didn't have an auger-style bit big enough for the dowel rod so he had to bore the hole a more difficult way.  But it's in...

He has a special saw just for cutting off these rods so that it cuts flush without marring the rest of the surface.

A trial run - looks great!  You can see Jim put up a block at the base of the brace to help hold it in place while installing.

Now that we know it's fit, time to make molding for next to the door trim as well as for the other side of the knee brace.

Putting up the molding...

Jim is going to attach the top of the knee brace to the steel blocking with a lag bolt to make sure everything is secure.  First step was to drill a hole through the steel.  This also helps structurally support the load of the overhang and shingles.

Putting the knee brace in place...

He used wood screws to attach the knee brace to the sheathing from inside.

It's amazing to me that Jim had the foresight to put up these steel blocks when we were doing the initial framing and sheathing.  Now he's able to attach lag bolts through the steel and into the brace to again make for a solid connection.

There always has to be an extra tricky component - Jim had to get up into the overhang structure to be able to attach the lag bolt through the top.

Knee brace is all attached!  Jim is now putting the flashing on the other side.   We'll be ready for siding in this area now.

Next, Jim started prepping the other side for its knee brace.

Jim got everything marked, prepped and flashing made.  At the end of the day, he did more painting on the back of the building.  Pictures to follow!

7.28.2017

It was kind of a different day - Jim worked this morning and then headed to Drywall Center to pick up more insulation and more adhesive.  While he was there, he talked to the president of the company.  He ended up coming out this afternoon to make sure all was well with the site for delivering drywall.  He stayed for quite awhile - we had some interesting conversations!  Again, where does that happen that the president of the company comes to your house?

But he stayed for quite awhile so it did take up some time.  Jim always manages to get lots done though.  He got another two cavities in the workshop filled...

He decided that he wanted another stud in this wall in the bathroom so he put up a top track for installing another stud.

He worked on making the other knee brace...

Working on the bandsaw...

Meanwhile, I put a coat of primer on the knee braces...

Once Jim got the other knee brace pieces made, I got those primed too.  Tomorrow may be installation day!

Jim installed the final trim pieces underneath the rake boards...so now this dormer wall is all finished!
