2.28.2022

We weren't quite expecting it, but we got probably 4-5" of new snow and it was a gorgeous morning on Angel!

Jim continued working on wood for his writing desk top...

He put the top through the drum sander - it really looks pretty...

Jim knew that he would have to move his table saw to accommodate longer pieces of wood now that we have the pantry room.  Since he needed to cut a long board, today was the day to move it and then re-level the out feed table.

Now he can cut this long piece!

He's using wood from that board to make the border on the desk top...

Jim next worked on the shower moulding - he had to make this cut to accommodate the bump out on the bottom...

Figuring out lengths for the next pieces...

2.27.2022

Jim glued up more pieces for the desk top today.  In addition, he has started getting some wood together for another project - a medicine cabinet for the wood shop bathroom.

Cleaning up a saw blade that he wants to use to cut the PVC trim board to do the shower trim work.  This material is used for exterior trim, so it will be good in the shower.

Experimenting putting a cove finish on the outside edge...

Trying it out on the edges of the shower...

All of the pieces are cut and have the cove cut.  Now he just has to figure out how he will make it all come together and get it fastened!

2.26.2022

Jim ordered a new pump for his paint gun; hopefully that will fix the issue.  Until it comes in though, he's kind of dead in the water on the kitchen cabinet.  So he started prepping wood for his desk top...

Wood gluing...

In the afternoon, Jim headed out to clear the driveway.  The sun has been so bright today that the fluffy snow has compacted and turned thick and wet.  Snow blower worked great though and we're all cleaned out in case we need to go anywhere.

2.25.2022

Jim sanded the primed cabinet pieces today...

Rolling on the paint for the inside pieces...

At this point, Jim got ready to spray the pieces of the inside cabinet that will show.  He spent awhile trying out the gun to see how it would work first and then finally decided to try it out.  He wasn't happy with the gun performance or how it painted.  Of course, then he had to spend another 1-1/2 hours cleaning the gun.  He'll have to order more parts or maybe even a new gun.  In addition, we're out of paint so when the weather breaks, we'll make a trip to the hardware store.  Just one of those days...

Jim presses on though (my hero!).  He did some sanding on the desk leg pieces...

These are all sized and sanded...

It's been snowing all day - hard to see exactly how much we've gotten but it's probably close to the 10" mark at this point.  Jim is waiting until it stops before plowing, so that will be on the agenda for tomorrow.  Sure was a pretty day - very fine, light snow - nice to see everything all under a winter blanket again!

2.24.2022

Today was the calm before the proverbial storm.  We are forecast to get between 10"-15" of snow starting in the wee hours and lasting all day tomorrow.  So Mom and I headed into Saratoga to do some grocery store pickups so we can just hunker down all weekend.

Jim had been busy while we were gone - the doors came out of the gluing process and test fit inside the frame...

Doing the drilling for the hinges...

Putting the hinges in place so that all the holes are predrilled and ready to be attached when everything is complete...

Jim also made and attached the stop at the very top of the opening so that the door remains flat when closed.  This is going to be such a beautiful cabinet!

Gluing up the last wood section to make the desk legs...

Jim has two of the legs cut to size...

He's also starting to prepare wood for the desk top so there are some piles of oak in the shop now!

He was able to get a coat of primer on both sides of the doors too...

At the end of the day, Jim headed into town to get diesel fuel for the Bobcat.  He filled it up once he got home, so we are as ready as possible for the weather.  Stay safe everyone!

2.23.2022

 Jim gluing the cabinet door...

First door glued and in clamps, working on second door...

Both doors glued...

He also glued up the sections of oak that he will be using to cut leg pieces from...

Putting the jointer knives back in - everything has to be perfectly aligned in order for it to work correctly...

No - Jim is not sleeping on the bathroom floor!  He's using a file to smooth out the corner edges on the moulding...

Putting a coat of primer on the nail holes and seams...

More tool maintenance - cleaning the table saw blades...

2.22.2022

Where were you at 2:22 today?  Okay, so I missed looking at that but we'll still celebrate the uniqueness of this date!  We're having Taco Tuesday as well just to complete the celebration.

Jim started gluing the pieces of wood together to make one board that he will use to cut the desk leg pieces from...

Glued and drying...

Sanding the primed door panels...

A coat oof gray on the edges of the panels...

After that side dried, he was able to get the other side painted as well...

Then it was time for one of those necessary evils - machine and tool maintenance.  He took apart his jointer because the blades had nicks in it which you can see if you can look closely...

He also had to clean all the pitch of these jointer parts...

He went down to his grinder and got it set up to sharpen the blades...

Sharpening...

He has 3 sets of these jointer blades - they are all sharpened now...

While he had everything out, he is sharpening all the chipper blades too - just a bit of difference between before and after!

Nine jointer blades and ten chipper blades later, Jim is done sharpening.  With the time he has left, he's starting to reassemble the jointer...
