5.31.2021

Hope everyone had a Happy Memorial Day and took just a little time out of your day to think of all those who have died to protect our freedoms.

In the shop today, Jim started prepping wood to make baseboard moulding - putting glue on the pieces...

Putting them together...

And putting them in the clamps to dry...

Jim also put the hinge on my last kitchen cabinet door...

Putting the door into place...

This corner looks amazing - I love all my cabinets!

Jim sanded the wood sill on the upper landing today...

Taped it off...

Then he started sanding...

Continuing to stain...

All stained!  He also cleaned the middle landing floor in anticipating of doing the grout there.

Jim finished up his day working in the metal shop on his Bobcat lift adaptor.  He got the hook attachment welded on and had just a little more finish welding to do.

Jim did some more design work on the baseboard moulding today - it's made more complicated because of the steel stud wall framing - he can't easily attach moulding to that.  So he's going to put a plywood piece in place first - he'll be able to fasten that to the framing with screws.

He cut a groove in the back of the cap moulding so that it fits over the plywood as such...

It will then sit on the moulding - this is a side view so all three pieces are shown how they will fit together.  He made a bead on the main moulding or just rounded it over for us to decide - we think we like the rounded over look...

Then Jim turned his attention to installing the dishwasher.  He had to drill a hole in the side of the cabinet to bring the water line through...

Both electric and water lines are in the dishwasher space now...

Then he had to bring them out through the front of the dishwasher...

Jim was smart and had placed wood underneath the Corian countertop for stability but also so he could screw into the wood when fitting it into place...

The armor cable was longer than Jim wanted it so he had to carefully cut off the metal part until he got it to the length he wanted...

Wiring it into the dishwasher...

He thought he had a connector that would work for the water line but he didn't; he'll get that ordered and then it will be ready to go!

Jim had to turn on the heat last night - it was 39 degrees in the evening!  It just came on for a bit early this morning - we're loving the cooler weather!

Jim ordered new cutting blades for the moulder so he started experimenting on the baseboard design...

A sample of what it will look like - gorgeous!

Jim decided to work on getting electricity to the dishwasher today.  We had a receptacle and water supply right behind where the dishwasher was going to be in the original design, but since we moved things, Jim has to do more work!  He first drilled a hole in the floor below the receptacle...

He got special wired armor cable and had to feed it through the hole into the floor and into the wood shop...

This is a right-angle plug so that it will lay perfectly flat against the wall...

All the cable dangling into the shop...

Jim had to decide the best path to get the cable where it needs to be and then he started attaching it to the existing water lines...

Next step was to move the dishwasher out of the way...

He drilled a hole in the floor and brought up the armor cable...

Then he had to attach a receptacle box to the floor...

He wired up the receptacle - he just needs to wire it into the front of the dishwasher and electric work will be done.

We are going to church in person today, tickets in hand!

Jim cleaned up the shop after our tile work and started getting ready for next steps.  He also cut some of the wood he bought from the local sawmill to make some extra shelves in the pole barn...

Pieces cut...

Jim started working on installing the next cabinet door - this one required everything out and Jim drilling holes for the hinges on the backside - not the easiest task when you can't see...

He also made and installed a little block at the top corner to stop the door...

Looks amazing!

Didn't take me long to get it all filled back up - this is a great storage area.

Jim divided a new bucket of plaster today and made a skim coat mixture in another bucket that he'll use in the wood shop...

5.27.2021

This morning, Jim brought up my cabinet doors to install!

Look how gorgeous they look!  Just two more to install.  Jim hadn't put some of the hinge hardware on the inside of the cabinets so those will require more work.

Jim got both of the post assemblies put together so that his next step was to get them separated and into the general area where they will go.

He brought the Bobcat inside the auto bay and carefully lifted one of the posts with the forks...

Then he set each end down onto one of the car dollies...

He was then able to just move it around!

Time for the second one.  He got it lifted up and then removed the blocking...

Then setting this post down onto the dollies...

Moving it into place...

Both posts are in the general vicinity where they will go - this was a huge step to complete!

Our next project was to move all the rebar that Jim had stacked up against the front wall of the metal shop.  Besides taking up valuable floor space, he needs to be able to work in this area for plastering.  So Jim dragged a few pieces out at a time and I grabbed the other end and we stacked them up on the Bobcat forks...

Tied down and ready to be transported up to the top of the hill...

We put Jim's newly-made cradles on top of the blocks and then re-stacked the rebar...

In between other tasks, I gave the floor another good scrubbing - it really looks beautiful!
