Jim made a smaller squaring block today for the smaller diameter pegs, and also cut off a peg to use when attaching the block to the post, so he doesn't need a flashlight to make sure he has it centered...
Then it was back to work carving the shoulder pockets for the ceiling joists...
All four shoulder pockets in this bay are now done...
Time to load up two of the joists onto the forks...
Jim placed them on the beams and then got up on the ladder and maneuvered them into place...
Then he just slid the first one into place...
Maneuvering the second joist into place...
Both fit perfectly and look amazing!
Moving into the other bay, Jim first measured the pocket locations...
Did the initial cuts with the Japanese saw...
And then started carving...
Carving out the smaller section below...
Then he moved on to the next pocket - testing with his jig to ensure a perfect fit...
Carving the smaller section...
Testing that with the jig...
Once the front two pockets were carved, Jim went into the shop and cut some pieces of plastic. We're supposed to get rain tonight and over the next couple days, so Jim didn't want water to collect in these areas...
Stapling plastic over the pockets...
Once Jim got trash duty done, he went back to the pavilion and got the back pockets measured and marked. He got one started, so another good day's work!
It's been warm these past few days (although we haven't hit 90° all summer!) but Jim has just pressed on doing all this manual labor. Once the sun moves over, this area is nicely shaped and there is usually a bit of breeze in the air.
