Jim had to meet someone this morning for a Craigslist sale - one more thing out of here! He came home, ate lunch and then headed outside to get things ready for an afternoon of work on the pavilion.
He got things set up, including some planks on top of the ceiling joists that he can work from...
Pegging is the next step, so Jim first put his square block on...
Then used his auger bit to start drilling out the hole...
Switching to his new long auger bit...
Hole drilled - pounding in the peg...
Picture from on top - both pegs in!
Pegs cut off flush with the beam...
Pulling his straps tight using the steel bar jig he made...
Starting to drill the front hole - this is the peg that will go through the tenon, the post and the other beam...
Switching to the long auger bit...
Cutting it off...
Jim let me home on top to see how he has to plan out the peg locations - he marks the front peg and the tenon to make sure that when he drills down from the top, he's not hitting anything else...
Taking all the straps down...
Checking out how plumb the posts are now - both were perfectly straight!
Next is pegging the braces to the beam - drilling from one side...
Punching through the other side...
Pounding the peg through...
Starting on the brace's lower joint...
This time, he has to drill the whole way through since there's no access on the other side...
Cutting off the peg - he'll be able to use the rest of this peg on another joint...
He got both brace joints on the back side done - now this side is all pegged!
