Another gorgeous day to be outside! Jim assembled the first rafter today...
He was worried about making this joint but it is perfection!
Time to carve out the next one - you can see he makes a lot of little cuts with the saw...
Then starts chiseling it out...
Done and cleaning it up...
Bringing it over to its mate...
Next, Jim needed to carve the beam where the rafter will intersect - first measuring and marking...
He made a jig to test the fit...
Continuing to carve...
This is another complicated carve - it has the front section where the long area of the rafter fits and a smaller section to complete the shoulder cut of the rafter. This is partially finished...
He decided he wanted his jig thinner, so he brought it in and cut it in half...
Testing with his jig - perfect!
He moved the Bobcat over and then started measuring and marking the next cut...
Starting to carve...
Then he moved around back to cut the first joint there...
He got that joint carved and then had to switch gears. He wanted to start and run the excavator because it had been awhile, so he took the opportunity to just turn over the grass that had grown in the top soil pile...
He had to put away all the tools and equipment and do more grass cutting.
