Another exciting day! It was pretty crazy to go out to the building and see all that drywall. Of course, after that excitement comes the fact that we have to put all that drywall up! Jim has been pretty concerned about how attaching drywall to steel would go.
In the morning, Jim first worked outside on the siding. He got the top cap flashing made for the mounting block and then put the spacer up.
Next is the starter strip...
Then starting to put siding up!
But after lunch was the big transition to drywall. We will obviously still have to continue to work on siding and outside work, but we were so excited to see how the drywall would go. Of course, lots of figuring out what tools we need, where they are located, gathering up the new screws for this job.
Getting ready to cut the first piece. I forgot all the particulars about drywall - both long sides are tapered slightly so you can tape the joint and have it come out relatively flat. However, Jim doesn't like tapered ends next to the wall - he likes to butt flat joints together at wall and ceiling. So he cut the piece to size...
... and then cut one of the tapered sides off.
He figured out exactly where the fan box would go and marked it on the drywall, using his compass of course!
After the piece was cut, I marked all the stud locations as well as where Jim would put screws. He made it easy for me with a marking board - one side is 8" on center (for the edges of the sheets); the other side is 12" on center for the stud markings.
First hurdle - we got the drywall into the second bedroom and up on the lift. This is the 5/8" drywall - I was just hoping I would be able to hold up my side without causing Jim any more issues! But all went well thankfully!
Lifting the piece up...
First piece is up in place...
After a few adjustments to how far the gun drove the screw, Jim was very pleasantly surprised that it wasn't as difficult as he feared - the best news! He was able to use both his cordless Duraspin and his corded drywall driver with good results. We both breathed a sigh of relief - we were afraid that it was going to be very difficult driving the screw through both the drywall and the steel.
Lift is off and Jim is finishing the fasteners.
Cutting the hole for the fan box...
Success! First piece of drywall up and fastened!
Time for the second piece - you can see this one had a special cut to fit around the doorway...
It's up in place...
Fastening...
We got to use our really sharp chalk line - Jim needed to cut a piece lengthwise first and then cut out the doorway piece again.
It's up in place...
Putting up the last piece...
Jim is really happy that he took the time to attach all the angle pieces when he did the final framing details. He was able to attach the edges all the way around through those steel angle pieces for a really tight fit.
We'll wait until we get scraps to finish the little edge piece but otherwise the second bedroom ceiling is all drywalled! A great first afternoon!
