8.16.2017 - Drywall delivery!

Jim and I are still kind of disbelieving that we are about ready for drywall.  We've come so far but drywall always seemed very far ahead.  But it's here!  When Jim ordered the drywall on Monday, his rep said delivery would be either Wednesday or Thursday, depending on when the truck came in and of course weather dependent.  We had to be ready for today and the call came late morning that they would be at the property sometime after 2:30.

Jim has done so much preparation for drywall.  He has spreadsheets of calculations trying to figure out how much he will need and where it goes.  There are new lighter-weight options now and but because most of our studs are 2' on center, Jim was not willing to go with using just 1/2" drywall on the ceilings and outside walls, so he stuck with 5/8".  Because we have varied ceiling heights, some drywall had to be bigger but not too big that we can't do it by ourselves.  Then he had to factor in how the drywall was packaged - you had to buy certain quantities.

Besides all that prep work, Jim had to also figure out where all the drywall would go in the carriage house when it was delivered.  Factored into that decision had to be the weight of the drywall.  Because we have 4' spans in the apartment, you can't lay drywall just anywhere.  Jim wanted it to span across multiple trusses as well as be closer to the edges.  Just in the apartment, the weight of the drywall was over 5000 pounds!

To make sure that the drywall got put where he wanted it, we used tape and marked off all the dimensions and marked each one with the drywall size.

Putting our tape line markings...

Since the top scaffolding is down, Jim had to put a ladder outside to take down the plywood covering over the window.

Taping back the house wrap again...

Once all the prep was done, we had to wait.  Which is always hard - you can't really get involved in anything because you are waiting for the truck to pull up the driveway.  Plus, we need to be out in the front to direct the truck to the upper driveway.

Jim put the block up for the electric pull box...

Jim made flashing for the sides of the block...

Putting the flashing on the other side...

Just about 3:00, the truck pulled in with all our drywall!

The placement of the truck was another piece for Jim to plan and worry about.  He did some extra grading this morning to flatten the area a bit and used marking paint to show the farthest he wanted the outriggers to reach.  The boom has to go a long way carrying huge weights of drywall and the truck could potentially tip if things weren't safe.  We even ended up scurrying for some plywood to put underneath the outrigger for extra support.

They started off with the first stack...

And boom it up to our window!  Then they work from inside taking each piece off the lift.

They had a cart they could put a small stack of drywall on and then they could wheel it to various rooms.

Jim helped steady the cart while they brought pieces in...

These were the really long pieces!

It was a tight fit getting drywall into the kitchen area...

Brining more drywall in...

All the drywall for the apartment is now unloaded!  Here's the stack in the kitchen...

...and in the rest of the apartment.  There is a total of 147 pieces of drywall weighing 5308 pounds!

But that's not all...the rest Jim had brought into the wood shop...

This is 44 pieces for a total of 2503 pounds!  In addition, we got 6 pails of joint compound and lots of tape!

The two guys who delivered did a great job and did everything just as Jim asked them to.  There is so much to worry about - hitting the building with the boom, causing damage to the house, hitting the insulation and tearing it, just to name a few.  It took them over 2 hours but everything went smoothly - we are so grateful!

After they left, it was time to catch our breath and then Jim went back onto the scaffolding and put tape over the window.  We'll finally be able to get the last apartment window put in!

On another subject, the nice dryer vent Jim ordered came in last night.  Very pretty!  It has a backdraft damper on the inside.  He ordered one without that damper for the bathroom vent.  We still have to order the microwave vent but he wanted to see how these were first.

Another HUGE block to check - all the drywall is now in the apartment...we just have to worry about putting it up but we'll think about that tomorrow.  Tonight, we toast to a most successful day!

High 76/Low 48 - gorgeous!
