12.5.2016

We woke up to about 3" of snow this morning and it continued snowing lightly most of the morning.  We were a little disappointed because we were hoping to continue work on the fascia and soffits after such a good day yesterday.  But we know that there will be windows of opportunity to do outside work.

Jim used the cold, snowy start to run a few errands this morning - he went to the electric supply company to get a coupler that actually fits the way it is supposed to!  Now we'll be able to continue work on bringing the permanent power into the building - again, when the weather allows.  He also stopped at Lowe's for a few supplies.

Our new lights came in today and I was so excited to see how they looked on the carriage house - they are perfect!  They fit just the way we wanted in relation to the electric connection.  Plus, we think they fit better with the style - they kind of look like old-fashioned lanterns.

Whenever we can get back outside, Jim has the next piece of fascia all ready to go - this will complete all the fascia on the side of the auto bay.

Jim worked in the apartment transferring lines for the other hallway walls.  Then he measured and started getting wood ready for the lower wall plates underneath.  He got to use his jointer - he is so happy having all his tools back and working!

Cutting the board to size...

Back upstairs, putting glue down first.

Then fastening it down to the subfloor.

Putting down the board for the next wall section...

The wall plate for the double wall around the box beam rafter is tricky, but it helps that Jim had already done the first one.  It requires cutting a slot in the wood first, where the clip angle goes, and then doing some hand chiseling where the screws attach the clip angle to the floor.

More chiseling on the top side where the rafter comes down to the floor.

But it all worked perfectly!

Vacuuming the floor first so that the glue has a clean surface to stick to...

Putting down the glue...

...and then the board.

Fastening it down...

Our steel order is still in the works but Jim had some track pieces for the front walls so he cut them to size and then punched the screw holes.

Attaching the track to the wall plates.

Jim cut a few of the studs that will go in these areas - hopefully tomorrow we'll be building walls!
