Then he used his hole saw to cut through all the house layers!
Ta da...all done. He also got all of the painting done on the trim boards.
You can see how many layers he had to go through - it took him quite a while to cut. He also made the flashing for the top of the trim boards as well as on the sides.
After lunch, we switched gears and started working on the auto bay roof. It was still chilly with a brisk wind, but the forecast certainly doesn't show any warmer days to come.
Jim first cut the roof vent material for the ridge.
Fitting it to the ridge...
and attaching it in place.
Starting to put the ridge shingles on top. There are so many layers here and the surface is very "bouncy" because of the vent material so Jim has to predrill each of the nail holes.
This has been another challenge that Jim was been working in his mind for a long time - how to finish the end of the ridge where both hips meet to make sure everything is sealed and no water can get in. He came up with a plan and is trying it out. He cut a ridge shingle part way down the middle.
Then he got his heat gun out to soften and be able to bend the shingle.
Shaping the shingle...
Once it was done, he had basically made a cap with the two overlapping pieces - genius!
To make sure nothing would leak, Jim made another piece of flashing to go underneath.
Time to install. Lots of our magic caulk first...
Putting the flashing on...
Predrilling and fastening it in place - it worked perfectly!
Doing some final caulking around the copper flashing.
All done!! Looks amazing and we're so thrilled to have this area done.
Looks great from the front view too....
After a final check, time to take the roof jacks off. These have been on for a long time!
In order to reach the last roof jack, Jim had to use a ladder on the roof.
Everything is finally off both sides of the auto bay roof!
After celebrating for awhile, time to get back to the electric work. You can see that Jim has all the holes cut in the steel where the conduit will come in and get attached to the breaker box.
This is the view from outside all the way to the box!
This is the pull elbow that will attach to the side of the house. It opens up and will allow Jim to pull all that heavy-duty wire through. Jim is drilling holes to attach to the trim boards.
Then he glued the conduit to the box.
The next step was to put the conduit through the outside hole through all the studs. Then Jim has a connection that mates the conduit to the box. He glued everything up, went to attach it and, uh oh. It wouldn't fit on the conduit! The connection is the right size to go on the conduit but it wouldn't fit! Very discouraging - we were hoping to get this step done tonight and then be able to do wiring tomorrow. Now because tomorrow is Saturday, we aren't sure if the electric supply company will be open.
But we won't let that little bump in the road take away from the major accomplishment today - the auto bay roof is done!
