6.21.2019 - Pole barn concrete!

What better way to celebrate the first day of summer than to pour concrete?  However, when I got up this morning and saw the forecast, I was very, very nervous.  Rain and concrete aren't a good mix. Thankfully, however, it was a light mist all morning so it didn't cause any issues.  I'm sure Jim had a sleepless night - he told me to make sure he was up by 6:00 but he was up well before that.

The contractors arrived right at 6:30 to get everything prepared.

Right at 7:00, the concrete truck pulls in...

They put the chutes on and then decided that it would be better if the concrete truck backed in.

So he repositioned...

Let the concrete pouring begin!

 Making good progress...

Using the power trowel (note:  we need one of these!)...

Some hand troweling as well...

Continuing on...

The driver kept repositioning to get the concrete where the guys needed it so Jim provided direction to make sure he didn't hit the house!

Power troweling...

Power trowel out and hand floating...

Concrete requires quick cleanup work!

All placed and doing final hand troweling...

So while the contractors did all their cleanup work, the next phase was to get the pad poured for the generator.  The concrete truck driver pulled up the upper driveway.  Check this out - it rained all afternoon (and very hard at times) and is still lightly raining - this huge heavy truck doesn't even make a dent in the soil!

This form was all filled with water last night but it's in perfect shape now as Jim awaits concrete.

 Placing the concrete...

 Hand screeding...

Just a bit more concrete...

Hand troweling to make sure the concrete has no voids...

Cleaning out the truck...

 Edging the concrete...

Plastic covering the top just to keep the rain off.

Now it's a waiting game.  With the cool temperatures and light rain, it will be awhile before the guys can power trowel the floor.

Although it's difficult, Jim is trying to keep busy.  He put the next coat of polyurethane on the bottom of the shelf...

And making flashing and drip edge for the pole barn...

Some finished pieces...

Time to do the first troweling...

Back in the pole barn, they are ready to do their first troweling as well.  They first do all the edges by hand since the power trowel can't reach those areas.

Bringing the power trowel into the pole barn...

Troweling...

Jim can now do the finish troweling on the generator pad...

All done - looks beautiful!

Altogether, they did three power troweling sessions on the floor...

Jim was so kind to let the birds hatch in their nest on our rake - however, they made a mess on our new concrete!  So much for being kind!

The final pictures - a very successful concrete pour!  After the rainy weather, we were nervous but it turned out perfectly and we couldn't be happier.  The guys didn't leave until 12:30 so it took 5-1/2 hours from start to finish (with a lot of waiting time in there!).

Jim had the concrete truck driver clean out on the upper driveway but then there was a pile of concrete there.  Jim brought up the Bobcat and turned it into gravel...

Concrete all done so Jim went back to working on flashing.  He had to design a piece of flashing for the end of the soffit area before the slotted area.  This piece will slide into the channels of the flashing he already has started to install.  All of this will be more clear once he starts attaching it all.

Now that we picked a new paint color for the moldings and trim, I was anxious to see how it would look.  Jim started repainting at the end of the day.

This outer trim piece has dried and I'm really liking the color...

All done and drying!  Hopefully we can have a door hung this weekend!

Quite the day...we are so thrilled that the concrete went so well - a huge checkmark!
High 72/Low 54 - drizzly in morning during concrete then beautiful!
