10.13.2017 - Stove/microwave vent in!

Jim made a lunchtime trip to the Drywall Center to pick up more rigid foam board and some insulation for the workshop bathroom...

Besides that, the day was spent working on the stove/microwave vent.  After making his prototype yesterday, Jim made more plywood hangers for the ductwork...

He drained 2 batteries in his circular saw cutting out the 6" hole through the trim board and sheathing - plus it took a really long time!

Finally, success, and we have a giant hole in our house!

He spent all morning in the attic working out the placement of the ductwork and attaching everything together.  Here's the beginning of the run, with the ductwork coming up through the ceiling of the kitchen...

...and continuing on to the end wall.  This was an extremely cramped environment for Jim to spend so much time working on his knees - and of course it involved lots of trips up and down the ladder too.  But the run looks so elegant!

Next was working on making the ductwork inside match with the outside.  Jim temporarily put up the ductwork and flange on the outside...

Then worked inside to make pieces that would mate the two together...

Success!

Wow - check out this vent - so cool!  Instead of the backdraft damper like the dryer vent, this has a screen in it to keep the bugs out.

Now that the ductwork all mated up, time to attach the outside flange permanently, making sure it's a tight fit and caulking.

Putting the vent on...

All done - check out the reflection again!

The vents look really elegant on the carriage house!

Jim had to go back up into the attic and start on some of the finishing work on the duct pieces.  He always screws them together as well as uses aluminum tape to make sure everything is sealed well.

This was the most challenging vent - Jim wasn't sure how it was all going to work out.  But it came out perfectly and Jim is thrilled that he can check that box as done!
