10.12.2017 - Dryer vent in!

Jim worked on lots of different fronts today.  He made the spacers for the valley rafter and started installing those.  You can see the completed upper wall that we did yesterday that I failed to take a picture of.

He started putting soundproof insulation in the master bedroom walls...

He also got the door seals on the bottom of the double stairwell doors...

Now that we have the scaffolding set up in front of the stairwell, the next task was to install the dryer vent.  That required Jim to drill a 4" hole through layers of trim board and sheathing so he first made a jig and put that up.

Cutting out the hole...

Cutting the duct piece...

The hole is cut and Jim is trying things out to see how all the pieces will work.  This is the flange that Jim painted orange for protection.

And our awesome dryer vent!

Now that he knows the outside parts will work, time to put it together for real.  Using aluminum tape to connect the ductwork to the flange.

Then testing out the connection from outside into the laundry room...

Jim has the other flange piece mounted on a steel plate that he will attach to the studs when everything is assembled.  He had to use 45 degree duct work to connect the two.

He used more aluminum tape on the ductwork connections in the wall...

Back outside, Jim caulked well underneath the flange...

After everything was caulked, Jim put the vent on.  This vent has a backdraft damper in it so it will stay closed unless the dryer is on so no creatures can enter the house.  Check out the amazing reflection of the property in the vent!

Fastening the plate to the studs...

Everything is all done - this area will be ready to have the rest of the insulation put in and then drywall!

Jim spent the rest of the late afternoon working up in the attic, trying to figure out the ductwork for the microwave vent.  The outside vent he ordered came in yesterday, so that will be the next vent to work on.  Jim figured out how he wanted to hang the ductwork and started making those hangers.

Jim also spent time today preparing for a Craigslist sale.  He had advertised our 2' sections of scaffolding - we needed them when we did the shoring but they aren't real useful now.  A guy called and wanted to come look at them so Jim spent time loading them up in the back of the truck.  The guy didn't come until after 6:00 - Jim just drove the truck to the end of the driveway so they could conduct business down there away from prying eyes!  The guy ended up buying them, so that's good.

High 59/Low 31 - beautiful; frost advisory out for tonight!

Happy Birthday, Julia - we hope you have a wonderful day!
