Jim's big challenge today was to figure out how to finish the copper plumbing in the wood shop for the living room/bathroom baseboard heating zone. There was way too much steel between the walls for him to be able to go through the wall so the plumbing goes down from the living room and back up into the bathroom. This is a finished picture of the plumbing in the bathroom.
With no room and working above his head, Jim had to make that plan happen. Everything has to be so precise - this was a painstaking process. But he got the Pex connection on the one down tube and had to figure out the next step to go through the wall.
On the other side of the wood shop bathroom wall, you can see that the pipe comes through the wall and needs to mate up with the living room down tube.
Trying his connection assembly out for size. He was short an elbow that he needed but found an old brass one that was from his dad's house when they put in a new furnace - a touch of home!
There was so much to worry about when soldering all these pieces in place - the wood decking, all the other soldered joints as well as the Pex tubing for the water in the bathroom. Once he got his heat shield and wraps in place, he started soldering.
The finished product! Looks amazing!
Poor Jim came home tonight feeling like he had just been wrestling with alligators, because the next step of this process is to start running the Pex heating lines. This Pex is the same that we used in the flooring so we knew how inflexible and unwieldy it is to work with. Now try to do that over your head, with angles and blocking - not easy! Jim is going to pick up a roll of Pex from Lowe's tomorrow. He's hoping that it will be slightly more flexible so we'll see. But at least this next phase is started!
