7.2.2018

One of the things the inspector told Jim that he had to do was get a driveway certification from the transportation department.  This was a bit frustrating because this was the first time Jim had heard of it.  Jerry made it sound simple - go to the transportation department and pick up a piece of paper.  Thankfully, Jim looked on line this morning and found the form that he needed to fill out - along with printing up a plot plan, finding contiguous neighbor addresses, etc.  Then the directions Jerry had given Jim were totally wrong.  But it all ended up okay - the fellow that Jim talked to once he found the place was very nice and signed off on Jim's paperwork.  We had to do this in Ohio too - and we had to make changes to the bottom of our driveway.  There are certain required widths for the apron so that emergency vehicles can make access.  Anyway - another check mark done for occupancy.

Jim didn't get back to the property until about 11:00.  He then did a little outside...he made the rodent screen for the air vent pipe and then got the PVC pipe all painted.  (Excuse the terrible picture - that must be my finger!)

Then he painted the mounting plate for the exhaust vent...

Then he worked back in the apartment on the shower.  He got the blocking for the doors all in place and fastened down.

Then he finished up the shims on the other side and made and installed the door blocking.

Next, Jim went to install the mixing valve trim and handle - and ran into an issue.  There was a threaded connection on the handle that screwed into the threaded connection on the valve  - it was just a little too short to make the connection.  Jim certainly didn't want to take everything apart to put another shim in.  So he took the trim ring down to his big press.  It just so happened that he had a plastic adapter that was just the size he needed - he just slightly pressed the middle of the trim enough so that he could screw the handle connection together.  You would never notice that he did that but it worked perfectly - very ingenious!

The walls are totally installed and the shower handle is in place - it looks fabulous!

Jim also unpacked our shower door today - he wanted to take the material home and read it before starting to install it.

Next was installing the drain.  Jim first put in the rubber seal...

Tightening the seal nut...this compresses the seal around the PVC pipe to prevent any leaks.

Time to test it out!  Jim poured buckets of water down the drain and then we went down and made sure there were no leaks.

Everything was good so then Jim put the screen on top...

All the plumbing is done...

The drain cover is the last step!

Jim brought up the temporary kitchen sink we bought to scope it out...

One side was equipped for a garbage disposal.  Even though we have already bought our garbage disposal, since this is a temporary set up we aren't going to install that now.  So Jim took that apart and we'll just replace it with a normal sink strainer.

Installing the last of the smoke detectors in the master bedroom...

All done and we tested the system out again to make sure everything is working together.

Another great day - Jim was able to totally cross off 2 items on the occupancy list (smoke detector and driveway permit).  The only thing left on the shower is to attach the actual shower head - so that item is almost crossed off!

After the work day, we headed into Lowe's.  Jim needed to pick up lumber to make the doorframe for the door in the metal shop.  He also wanted to pick up a strap wrench to be able to tighten the shower head without messing up the finish (his was too big), get more J-channel and pick up a sink strainer.  We struck out on the wrench and the J-channel - neither Home Depot or Lowe's had them.  We then celebrated our progress by stopping for a bite to eat at Applebee's before heading home.  (Jim didn't want me to have to cook dinner again in our 93 degree apartment - too sweet!)
High 94/Low 69 - heat wave continues
