1.8.2018

It would have felt like a mini-heat wave today since the temperatures got into the low 20s except for the fact that it snowed all day.  It was a light snow but constant all day - we probably ended up with at least 3".  So I stayed home to tackle the box room - I'm on a mission to get things into manageable boxes that we can put in the attic and get rid of what I can.

But Jim was very productive.  Unfortunately, he had to spend time working on the space heater in the metal shop that he wasn't counting on.  It wasn't cycling properly so he took the filter out and cleaned it and ended up taking the thermostat out as well.  It seemed to be working better - hopefully it will continue to keep things safe down there!  Just another worry...

Jim spent time working on the furnace system.  He hooked up the water heater sensor to the control panel on the furnace - so this is the first electrical connection!

He spent more time on drywall - you can see from the picture below that he had to be creative with his planking.  Before drywall went up on the landing wall, Jim had a piece of metal stud that he used to hold up the planks.  Since he had to take that down, he had to use a ladder on the landing with a plan that connected to the top landing.  But he got the drywall done above the door as well as the next piece on the wall.

Then he finished the last piece on that row of drywall...looks awesome!

One of the things we have to have done for occupancy is stair rails.  While Jim was working in the stairwell, he decided to start that process.  He made a wall section that attaches to below the dormer window, putting wood on the end so that he will later be able to attach railings there.

Then he put drywall up!

The next big task was to hang the door to the utility room.  He still has some minor adjustments to make when we put drywall on the outside of this wall but for now it's all good!  We are going to order more of these doors - for the woodshop bathroom as well as for in the wall leading to the stairwell from the metal shop (that wall is not built yet but on the agenda!).  Jim wanted to make sure he was happy with the door before ordering more - he was!

The view from inside...

While Jim was walking through the apartment, he glanced in the bathroom and did a double take because there was ice on the top window!  Jim was obviously concerned about why that would happen.  However, a closer look shows that the outside pain of glass is cracked!  Must have been a freak thing - a bird maybe?  We'll have to contact Pella and see about a replacement.

But meanwhile, Jim cut a piece of drywall scrap to fit just to keep any cold air and ice issues out.
