4.8.2016

This is a catch-up from yesterday - more explanation to come about that!

Another inside work day - still breezy and cold.  Jim worked in the morning on more electric work...he got the switch wired to turn on the middle bank of lights as well as wiring up the other switch box.

At lunchtime, we went to Home Depot to pick up our special order of high-efficiency and high-output fluorescent lights.  Check out the size of the box - it has 15 light bulbs in it!

Putting the bulbs in...

Turned on the switch - and let there be light!

Now we have two lights that turn on with the switch!  The light from these bulbs as well as the reflector backing that Jim ordered special for the fixtures really makes a wonderful working light inside.  Jim is anxious to order more fixtures!

He spent the rest of the afternoon working on the stairs.  He got all of the tread angles tacked in place.
He also made end pieces for the risers.

Late afternoon, I got a text saying that we were under a severe thunderstorm warning.  I texted Jim quickly to let him know.  No sooner did I do that then we were slammed with 60 mph winds and horizontal rain!  It was really crazy out.  Jim said that it was unbelievable up on top of the hill at Angel - he said the rain just beat against the front of the carriage house.  It wasn't long after the first wave of storms that we lost power at the apartment.  Luckily, Jim didn't lose power so he was able to continue working.

However, when Jim got home we still didn't have power.  We waited, Jim even went back to the carriage house to pick up a gas can, still no power.  Finally, about 8:00 we decided to walk over to the one restaurant in town to get something to eat.  It was very odd - our block was the only block without power.  We have 2 gas station/convenience stores at the end of our street and both were dark.  As we were walking, a truck pulled in with a giant generator and got one of the stores back operational.  The power didn't come back on until about 10:30 at night.  Hence, no blog update!

Today was another cold and blustery day - even had periods of flurries in the air.  Jim was hoping to get back up on the roof this afternoon but it was just too cold.

Here's the end pieces that Jim made for the stair risers...

You can see from this picture that Jim got more angle on the top - that will connect to the upper landing.

Doing drilling on more angle pieces...

Then we took the two pieces of angle Jim just drilled and went downstairs into the metal shop.  Jim got out his torches - he needed to bend both of the angle pieces to a precise angle to be able to attach to the lower landing.

Heating up the steel...

You can see the steel glowing - so Jim is then able to bend it.

Jim brought a piece of cut off that was the right angle so that he could make sure his bend was perfect.

Jim uses a steel hammer to sharpen up the bend on the angle piece...

The finished product!

Working on the next piece...

Two identical angle pieces!

While the steel was cooling, Jim went back to work on the electric.  This is how he converts the T-box into a double T - saving about $7.00 and a special order in the process!  He uses his step bit to drill out a hole...

Then puts the box adapter inside...

Time to glue the coupler onto the adapter.  Jim will later glue a piece of conduit that will connect to the light.

Using a clamp against a piece of wood inside the box to make sure everything is set in the right place.

Ta da!  A custom double T-box!

Before I left for the afternoon to go back to the apartment and catch up on some typing work, Jim set up his new sawhorses against the front wall.  Then we moved the break over - that way it's out of the main work area and at a better work height too.

Back to work on the stair risers - attaching the angle to the riser.

Jim took the risers out to the landing to try out the fit - you can see that the bottom part of the angle will be attached to the steel on the landing, while the clip angle on the riser will be screwed down to the landing subfloor.

After the stair work, Jim continued working on the electric and got conduit run for the next two lights!
