4.20.2016

Jim was very busy this morning making the copper valley flashing pieces.  The bottom piece in this picture is the final product after his trial piece.  It took a lot of trips up and down the scaffolding to make sure everything fit.  Pretty stressful working with copper!  The upper piece is the actual valley flashing.  Jim made it with a W valley shape.  The little peak in the middle acts as a dam so that water pouring down doesn't get back underneath the shingles.

These are the little clips that he made to fasten the valley flashing to the roof since you can't nail through the flashing.  Jim uses every bit of scrap copper that he can - a lot of his scraps we brought to New York from Ohio!

Jim made these drip edge guides - he will temporarily staple them onto the rake boards to keep the drip edge at the right distance so that actual fascia board will slip underneath.  He's always planning ahead to make sure everything turns out perfectly!

Jim had to figure out and mark exactly where the pieces would go...

Bringing up the valley flashing!  This piece is 8 feet long - Jim had to carry it very carefully so that it didn't buckle in the middle.

Maneuvering it up the scaffolding...

It's in place and Jim is starting to fasten it down.  He can nail the top piece in the middle because it will have flashing lapping over the top.

Jim took these pictures from the scaffolding - gorgeous!

The next step is to get ready for shingles.  Jim had to figure out where he wanted the shingles to end on the valley and then make a chalk line.  That involved putting a screw at the very top of the roof to hold one end of the chalk line, walking back down the roof, and making the mark.  Then going back up to move the screw to the other side of the valley and do it all over again!

It was like watching Spider Man walking on the roof!

Jim spent a little time after clean up and cut some grass - ours isn't really growing too much yet but the lawn mower died at the end of the season last year and Jim didn't get to mulch up the leaves down near the bottom of the driveway.  Now that he has the lawn mower in good shape, he was able to get that chore done.
