9.3.2015

Jim went out this morning and got busy working on the window framework underneath the header.  Again - this is a project that would be so easy with wood but becomes a metal art project with steel.  There are 7 pieces that make up this section underneath the header.  Unfortunately, because this wall is shorter, there isn't much room between the header and the top of the window frame.  Jim had a really tough time trying to get it to work out.

Plus, the humidity was really high today - typically, it's not as high as we're used to but today was an exception.  That and the heat just makes jobs harder.

I don't think this is proper safety protocol, Jim!  Standing on top of the window frame and driving screws into the back wall while 30 feet in the air!

Time to make the next window's pieces.

Installing the first piece.  Actually, Jim changed his approach and assembly method for this framework and this window went much better.

Concrete is again becoming an issue - although we have lots we can do this time, as opposed to being held up waiting for the deck pour.  Jim told the contractor last week that Friday was the day that looked the best.  The guy called Wednesday and said - how about tomorrow?  Jim said - no, the forecast calls for rain in the afternoon.  Jim told him again that he wanted Friday - he said he would check on a pumper truck.  And we've heard nothing.  Jim emailed him last night and he hasn't got a response yet.  So incredibly frustrating!

On the remote chance that the guy would come through and we could pour tomorrow, after lunch we decided to finish up some details on the ground slab to escape the heat for awhile.  Here Jim is covering up the clean-out valve.

And covering up the Pex tubing feeds...

As we were finishing up, the skies turned dark and we could hear thunder.  We scrambled to put all the tools away that we up on the top floor as well as below.  Then the forecast rains came.  It only lasted for about half an hour, but the rains were heavy during that time.  We haven't had rain in quite awhile so we certainly can't complain.  But it did get everything wet (as you can see in the picture below - more bailing required!)

Once the rain slowed down enough, Jim decided to go talk to his friends at the concrete plant to see if they had any more recommendations and I headed home to get a few things done.  Once Jim got back, he started working on filling in the little spaces around the edges of the floor with the rigid foam.

All the insulation is done now - besides removing the forms from around the auto bay, we're ready to go.  We just need a cooperating contractor!

While Jim was working on cutting and placing foam, I got the spreader out and used up the rest of the bag of grass seed we had from last year on a couple areas.  Even though there are a lot of weeds, the yard is really looking nice.  Not much time to work on it, but using up the grass seed has been on the to-do list for awhile.

Then we headed back up on the deck to work on sheathing a bit before the day was over.  First job was to cut out the bathroom window.

Then we put another piece of sheathing in place and Jim got enough screws in to secure it.

As we were cleaning up, we caught another glimpse of  our turkey mama and babies...which are getting quite big now!

All in all, another good day!
