6.8.2018

Jim concentrated his work today in the apartment bathroom.  He first started work on installing the pedestal sink.  He had to fasten the top of the sink to the base and then figure out where it would attach to the wall.  Thankfully, he had preplanned all this out and had put wood blocking behind the walls.  Then he was able to use his pliers to screw the lag bolt into the wall at the right places.

Next, he had to figure out where to attach the base.  Once he got the right depth (the red marker) he was able to find the exact location and drill a hole through the porcelain.

Next, he attached the baseboard heaters...

Unfortunately, I failed to get a picture of the attached pedestal sink so you'll have to wait until tomorrow - sorry!

Jim then brought up the shower side walls to figure out how to incorporate them into our shower stall.  He again had to trim a couple of the tabs that were on the back of the pieces that don't mate with our base.  He then had to figure out where the shower mixing valve needed to be and cut that.  These side pieces aren't fastened in place yet but good progress!

Then toilet work was next.  Jim figured out where he needed the drain pipe cut and used his vibrating tool to cut it to the right height.

Then he marked the spots to attach the toilet flange to the floor...

It took close to 2 hours for Jim to drill these holes through the porcelain tile!  You have to be careful not to shatter the tile but it's just slow going.  All done!

In order for Jim to be able to glue the flange to the pipe, he was going to have to apply quite a bit of pressure.  Underneath the floor, the pipe is held up by thin brackets which could easily snap and cause Jim a whole new set of problems.  So he got his shoring pole out which held everything in place.  He wrapped a towel around the opening so that no glue would seep out onto the floor below.

Jim had to use a small paintbrush to apply the glue to the pipe because the regular applicator was too big to fit around the pipe.

Gluing up the flange...

Applying the pressure to make sure it's a tight fit.

Ta da!  All done - the stainless steel flange is fastened to the floor with stainless steel screws!  Jim even replaced the shut off valve with a better one.

Jim needs to get the wax ring and a couple other screws so the toilet is just sitting here but it sure looks good!  However...putting it in place brought out another issue.  This toilet has a weird back to it and it is too tight a fit against the baseboard heater.  There's a specific distance you put the toilet from the wall in all the planning phases so who would have known.  Jim will just move the heater to the other side.

At the end of the day, Jim worked on just a bit more flooring in the apartment entry before heading home after a great day's work!

It is so incredibly exciting to see the bathroom come together - we've been talking about it and planning it for so long and it's really looking great (which you would have been able to see if I would have gotten better pictures!).
High 73/Low 45 - beautiful!
