Jim worked on the gas line this morning. He decided to redo the way he had the run to make it more straight forward. He had to temporarily remove one of the studs in this wall. Then he can see that he actually drilled a hole to the outside and has a piece of pipe extending outside! He needs another piece of black pipe to go from the vertical run over horizontally to the connection at the wall. I'll probably run and get that tomorrow.
We like the way the handrail looks when Jim makes the bend, so he got another one done today.
In the afternoon, it was back to flooring. Jim extended our keel line all the way to the door!
He came up with a better way to make the splines. He used a piece of hard maple that he had and was able to plane it down to the right width. Then he used the band saw to make thin slices. Then he was able to tap them into the flooring. Because they are so light, Jim actually took a black marker and colored the splines just in case they would ever show!
Hand nailing the cleats...
Putting the next piece in. You can see Jim has the end pieces by the door cut exactly. He'll have to later figure out a door sill.
Jim had to cut the width of this piece to the right size to fit around the wall. First, he used a hand saw just to make the initial cut...
Then he was able to take it to the band saw and cut the rest.
A perfect fit now!
End-of-the-day - the main hallway run is almost complete! You can see that all our careful planning and measuring of the keel line paid off - the floor is totally symmetrical which makes for a great look when you first come into the apartment.
The view from the bedroom down the hallway...
High 61/Low 47 - pleasantly cool! |
