Today was all about doing the furnace vent work to the outside of the structure. Well, except for checking out how good the floors look! I bought a piece of carpet runner at Lowe's that we are putting on the entry to help take construction dirt off our shoes. Plus, it's a good physical reminder to stay on the runner and not walk on the edges of the flooring that hasn't been done yet!
A lot of planning had to go into bringing the vents from the furnace outside. Jim has gotten everything in good shape but today was the day to get them outside. He first had to go out and take off a few shingles.
Then he cut the first hole for the exhaust vent!
Then the hole for the air vent...
He had to do a lot of prep work on the outside too. He had to use trim board to make a flat piece outside where the vents would come out. Because of the way the connections on the exhaust pipe are, he had to make this trim board two layers to bring it out to the right place.
And of course, he had to made flashing for underneath to make sure water stays away...
Jim wanted to put some primer on the bare wood openings...
Priming the outside of the holes...
While we were outside, I got to take a peek at the gas line coming out too. Again, I always marvel that Jim plans all these things out - looks so good.
Now that Jim has all the trim boards, he has to drill the exhaust hole all the way through...
All done!
More priming...
This hole has to be bigger than the pipe to allow for air circulation. It fit perfectly in the middle of the hole so Jim was able to clamp it down in place.
Exhaust vent work all done on the inside...
This is the outside piece of exhaust vent. It's black because it's UV resistant. And it has this cool rodent screen - yay!
All set and ready to move back outside...
These polypropylene pipes all lock together, which is nice, but a little more difficult going through the wall...
Then there is a seal and a plate that goes around the pipe. Jim didn't fasten it down yet - he'll finish everything and get the trim board painted before he does.
Next is the air vent - this is basically an exact fit through the hole and the pipe has to be glued together. Here he's gluing the first connection...
For the next piece, Jim had to glue the pipe and push it in from the outside while I had to push towards the outside to make sure we got a good tight fit. All done!
Jim needs an elbow so that the air vent pipe points down so that no rain or snow can come in - I'll pick that up tomorrow but it's capped for now.
Now that the inside work is done, Jim is able to start closing up this area. He made a blocking board and attached a clip to hold the vent in place and then started putting insulation in. The exhaust vent can't have insulation right around it so Jim will have to make a wood frame to keep it away from the pipe.
While Jim was doing the insulation, I worked on cutting more brush and weeds out from around our pine trees along the driveway. Then Jim did some grass cutting at the end of the day.
High 65/Low 47 - nice! |
