12.4.2015

Jim left early this morning to go pick up the box truck and then head to the cold-formed steel company to pick up his order of steel.

Then he spent most of the day making the rafters and all of the end wall blocking.  It was supposed to be dry today but there was a mist in the air for most of the day - just enough to make the steel wet, your gloves wet, and just have that damp feel to the air.

But Jim pressed on and got the rafters made...

Cutting the clip angles for the blocking...

All finished with the 6 pieces of end wall blocking.  In order to fit on the wall, these have to have a notch cut in them too.

Then it was time to put up the rafters!  Jim has to really maneuver these long pieces of steel around all the existing structure and scaffolding now.

All in place and Jim is just measuring the distance to make sure everything is in the right spot.  He just put enough screws to hold the rafter in place so that we could get things installed while there was still some daylight.

Bringing up the next rafter - this is the last rafter for the main building structure!

They are all in place now!

Jim is fastening the rafter in place...

Time for blocking!

Jim had to be quite the contortionist to get into a good position to get the screws in the outside wall!  He's standing on a ladder with the rest of his body outside the structure, leaning around the building!

It doesn't get better as he moves to higher blocking - one foot on the scaffolding platform, one foot inside the window header, leaning outside!

Jim got 4 of the 6 end wall blocking pieces in place.  Unfortunately, it got too dark to be able to see his measurements and do the rest.  He used the light on his driver to finish putting a few more screws in the rafters before heading down to the shop to make more drip edge.

This was a big accomplishment - for the most part, all the steel work is done on the main roof section!
