Such a cute couple in their matching coveralls! Actually, today was warmer than yesterday but we came prepared!
While Jim and Kyle were working on the roof, Julia and I got busy moving all the steel that we picked up last week. Half of it went into the shop for use in constructing the stairwell and the rest was for interior walls and went up on the top floor.
Julia and I also took twine and measured the distance between the electric meter box and the area that Jim wants the main electric line to go into the building. Apparently, wire is at a good price point right now and he wants to get it ordered this week.
We have been promising Julia (and ourselves) that we would have s'mores at the property. So on today's agenda was building a fire! Julia gathered some pieces of wood that come with the steel to use once the fire got going.
Quite the pretty fire pit, Kyle! All those Cub Scout meetings paid off apparently!
However, there's nothing like a good blow torch to get a fire going.
While the fire was getting ready, it was back to work. Now that the roof was done, Jim wanted to dismantle a good portion of the scaffolding and set it up to be able to work on the auto bay wall.
Jim and Kyle were able to make this task much smoother and quicker than Jim doing it by himself, since I'm not a lot of help except for carting pieces away once they get to the ground. Julia and I took over the ground portion - Jim handed pieces down to Kyle who handed them down to us.
The building really looks different now without all that scaffolding covering it up!
That task done - it was time for s'mores! Kyle's making some good sticks for us to use.
Time to start cooking!
Yum! Nothing like a s'mores around the fire!
Our bellies full, it was time to get back to work. Now the scaffolding is going up again.
Building up higher....
How to put sheathing on this side of the wall has been an issue for a long time. Jim came up with a plan so now it's time to put it into action! This is scary - trying to figure out how to work overhead on a peaked roof!
Doing some measurements...
Precisely placed plywood with toe boards on top will be the base to set up scaffolding on the roof!
Working on the other side...
Now to get scaffolding outside! They put feet in the bottom without any bases - the plan was for the feet to fit precisely on the edge of the toe boards.
Whew...first piece of scaffolding and cross bracing out onto the roof. Unfortunately, about this time it began lightly raining. So add slippery surfaces to the stress of setting up scaffolding on a roof!
Then the second piece - all those measurements they took originally have to be spot on for this to work. Adjustments can't be made easily at this point!
It worked! Jim is using the level to make sure it's in the right position.
Platform came next.
Ta da! It worked! Jim is standing out on the platform!
Time to build up another section. Jim will have to use a ladder on top of this section to reach the peak, but it's at least doable at this point.
Part II of the plan will be to make connection from the scaffolding tower to the scaffolding on the peak but that will have to wait for another day.
Feeling thrilled with all the accomplishments of the day, we headed home for hot showers, our Christmas dinner and movies!
