12.16.2015 - Front Wall Sheathing Done!

Weather forecasts are tricky things - yesterday the forecast was for rain and it didn't really rain.  Today wasn't supposed to rain, yet the morning was kind of misty.  It was so light that it didn't show up as raining on my weather app but it was enough to get the scaffolding and roof all wet so it changed the plans for the day.

Jim had cut the tip of the peak on the front wall last night - we signed it today!

A fitting peak...we'll know it's there even though it will be all covered up!

Jim worked on making some drip edge this morning, moved more ceiling joists up to the top floor, and brought up the two kitchen windows.

Jim ordered more gravel for the driveway and it came before lunch.  This time Jim had the driver start at the bottom near the road.

It really looks like a driveway now!!

Then Jim had him turn around and start closer to the building and he dumped until he ran out.

Top view...  We'll be in good shape now for the winter and shouldn't have big issues with mud.

After lunch, Jim felt like the scaffolding was dry enough to venture out onto - plus he had to use the ladder again to reach the peak.

Yay!  Jim is thrilled that the front wall sheathing is all done!

A close up view of the top...

Time for house wrap.  First we cut two pieces of the 3' wide house wrap.

The peak and top are all finished - tape and caps included.

Since the highest part was now done, Jim was able to take down the top-most level of scaffolding.

Then we cut a 9' piece of house wrap to do the rest.

Jim said putting house wrap on is like trying to gift wrap your house!  It curls back around you and blocks your view - not the easiest thing to work with.  Plus, Jim is of course a perfectionist about placing it.  It's completely flat and tight against the house, unlike the way most contractors apply it.

Jim placed this piece of house wrap so that he could cut off the angle and use it on the other side so we minimized waste.

Cutting out the windows!  Then I taped the edges all down.

It worked really well to flip over the house wrap and use it on the other side.  Thankfully, it was white on the reverse side - our OCD issues would have kicked in if the letters were upside down!  Jim had to then get off the scaffolding and get on the big ladder to finish the edges.

Ta da!  All finished!  We are so thrilled that this block is now checked too!

In the last minutes of daylight, Jim put the caps on the house wrap so that it's all officially finished.

  1. Wow! What a relief to get the whole house weatherproofed before Winter really hits. Congratulations! Will this allow you to work on inside projects most of the Winter, or will the land be too difficult to access? I hope you can. I love to read about your progress every couple days - so thanks for being so consistent with the blog. Happy Holidays!!
