8.21.2015

We had a light rain in the overnight hours and woke up to another beautiful day.  It was a day of a few distractions but still good progress.

Jim went to pick up our Pex tubing for the ground floor as well as all the fittings to hook it up to the manifold.  This took quite awhile and he didn't get back to the land til close to noon.

Jim got to start the day with his new tool pouch - it was waiting for us when we got home last night.

We were kind of holding our breath with his other one - it had just a bit of wear and tear (how many houses and projects were built with this tool belt?).  As you can see below, there was probably only 1/2" left of leather holding it on to the belt.

Figuring out the next step in the roof structure requires a lot of work.  As you can see from the drawing below, this is a close-up of all the angles and geometry involved in one corner.  Trying to come up with clip angles and make the proper cuts in the actual steel is extremely complicated.

Jim had to make a different design of clip angle for the corner.

Making cuts in the clip angle...

Then he made a plywood template first to see if his design worked - it did so he got busy transferring it to the steel.  This rafter will be a box rafter - it will consist of two pieces put together.  Unfortunately, it would be way to heavy for Jim to lift up if it was assembled first, so he will have to assemble it in place.

Jim had gotten a call that our door delivery would be between 2:30 and 3:00.  About 1:30, Jim took the Bobcat down to the end of the driveway.  We just started walking back up the hill and Jim's phone rang - the truck driver was trying to find the address and was 2 houses down!  He must have driven past us right before we got there.  I told Jim he must have known it would come early - it takes awhile to get the Bobcat done the hill and the truck driver would have been waiting awhile.

Taking delivery from the truck...

Here's our pallet of doors!  These are steel fire doors - 2 sets of double doors for entry into the stairwell from the outside as well as into the shop and another door going into the apartment.  Exciting!

I got plastic cut and wrapped onto the pallet.  Jim said we have the whole carriage house in pieces all over the site - we just need to assemble it!

While Jim was working on the steel, I did some more bailing of water from the inside since it rained some last night.  Mickey is much stronger - I can only do one bucket at a time!

The rafter pieces all cut - there are multiple cuts on both sides and the flanges - all different angles.  Very nerve-wracking - if one dimension is even 1/4" off, the whole piece will be off and not fit.  When you consider that these two pieces of steel cost over $100, that really makes you nervous!
