8.10.2015

Although it's temporary, Jim put up his first shop storage piece!  With the ceiling and walls starting to go up, it really feels like the inside of a shop now.

Then he got busy prepping for more sheathing work.  He had to make some extra supports for the landing connection in the stairwell.  He used the heaviest gauge steel - 14 gauge - that we've used so far in the actual building process (we used some for the shoring).

Then he screwed the supports down - adding another stud to the middle so that the support would be connected all the way across the studs.

Then it was time for another piece of sheathing...and all those screws.

Jim had spot welded a piece of angle iron to the landing so that the concrete could be rolled over nicely when they poured it.  It worked great - although this was another point where the concrete could have been done better.

But now it was time to take that piece off so out came the grinder...

...and off comes the piece of steel!

Fastening down the next piece...

Time for the strapping...

In order to do the next row, Jim had to build the scaffolding higher.

Marking off where the screws will go...

For the first time in quite awhile, rain is forecast for tomorrow so a little modification of our temporary covering of the stairwell was in order.  Now that we have something else to attach it to, Jim wanted to position the decking so that water would run off the building rather than down into it.  So he attached a stud piece to the bottom of the wall...

...and then we had to remove the old pieces, reposition them, and refasten.  Here you can see the two pieces on the left side are done with one more to go.

Once that was done, we wanted to see if we could divert the water a little past the building so that the block stayed as dry as possible.  Jim fastened pieces of track to the ends to extend past the brick ledge.

Hopefully we have another concrete contractor coming out to talk to Jim this week.  This person was recommended by the building inspector.  So far we're impressed - he actually returns texts and phone calls, which is a first among the others we've talked to.  Jim's already received his quote so meeting and talking about the job is the next step.  Fingers crossed!
