8.3.2015 - Deck is finished!

Kyle and Julia had to leave early this morning so the day started out with a trip to the casino so they could meet their bus.  It was such a good weekend - we hated to see them go!  But we got so much done and are grateful for their help and company!

Jim had to go to the storage unit first thing and then went back to work on the last row of decking.  This is all narrower pieces but because of the tongue and groove, it requires a new full piece to be used each time and then cut to fit.  Using a piece of steel as a cutting reference...

Lifting the cut piece up onto the deck...

Then screwing the piece in place....

Then it was back to working on a corner piece (inside joke to Kyle & Julia...note that it's a PRETTY piece!)

Jim let me take a turn screwing this corner piece into the nailer (not even the steel which is much harder).  All I've got to say is that it's a good thing Kyle was able to help Jim out - if he was relying on my speed, we would be working for quite awhile on this project!

Cutting the last corner piece for the deck!

Gluing it down...

Setting it into place...

...screwing it down to the steel frame...

...and putting in the final screw!!

Cue the happy dance on the completed deck!  All told, there was about 4,000 pounds of Advantech decking material and over 2,200 screws holding it all down!  What a huge block to have checked!

During our lunch, we drove out to the barn to pick up some Thompson's Waterproofing that Jim knew he had there.  Since we won't have a roof over the deck for awhile, Jim wanted to add some protection from the elements.  The Advantech features a longer exposure time than regular OSB, but extra protection will help.

We had one full gallon and just a partial 5 gallon can, so Jim went to work applying it to see how far that would go.  He decided that we would need a couple more gallons, so I went off to Lowe's.

Jim ran out of waterproofing while I was gone, so he used the time to take down the scaffolding in front of the door that they used to help get the decking material up on top.  Things look really open without the scaffolding blocking the view!  So now the ladder is the way to get up on top.

Applying the rest of the waterproofing...

So now the deck is totally in place and waterproofed - quite the accomplishment!
