7.31.2015 - First sheathing!

While Jim headed to the land this morning, I went to the DMV to reinstate the plates on the newer 4Runner.  Jim has been using the other 4Runner exclusively and it's definitely a work vehicle - it will be nice for him to drive a  different car every once in awhile!

When I got out to the land, Jim had set up his new roller for the brake - it is really nice and will make things much easier!

He made this great flashing for the ledger boards - it wraps around the bottom of the board and extends up to the top of the pour stop underneath the bottom track of the steel.  This way, there will be no exposed wood and no way that any insects can find their way to the wood.

Then we got busy working around the building on the ledger...

This front section poses all kinds of issues - it's on a hill and there's no good way to set the ladder up.  Because Jim is screwing the ledger board through various layers of steel, it requires lots of force - much different than if he was using wood and could use a nail gun.  The combination of pushing hard with enough leverage to screw the board down on an uneven surface isn't a good one.

Jim joked that he had a degree in advanced laddering but it was nerve-wracking watching him - especially when he scoots the ladder over...yikes.  Another issue I'm not sure I've mentioned - with steel, everything is hot!  On these hot days, you can't touch anything with bare hands!

Ledger board is looking good across the front.

Making sure everything is level along the way...

Attaching our first piece of flashing...

...and screwing it in place.

We were anxious to put up our first piece of sheathing, so here goes!  This is hefty plywood - 5/8" thick - so it's pretty heavy.

Jim got the plywood lifted up onto the ledger and I clamped it in place from the deck.

Then it was time to screw it down...

Again, not an easy task from the ladder.  We'll be able to use scaffolding in most of the other places which will make it easier.

First piece all in place!

Time for the second piece.  This one was even scarier because of the position on the hill - Jim had to walk the plywood up the ladder and get it into position.

Screwing it down...

Jim wanted to try out a piece of the bracing that will connect the two pieces of sheathing together and to the structure.

Looking out the window at our sheathing!!

Kyle and Julia are coming up from NYC to spend the weekend - this was the last of their scheduled cheap ticket buys.  It will be good to see them - and Jim has a few things in mind that will be much easier with Kyle's muscles than relying on mine to help!
