11.30.2017

Jim had another disjointed day - this one started dealing with transferring insurance coverage on the 4Runners and then heading out to the DMV to switch the plates over to the winter 4Runner.  Jim and I always marvel at the DMV here - first, it's tucked in a beautiful, scenic area, but then the people are just so genuinely nice and helpful!  And it never takes long, even when you walk in and the room seems full of people.  Quite the different experience than the ones we had in Ohio.

Once he got back to the property, he had to spend some time getting plates on the winter car, switching headlight bulbs, and just checking it over so that hopefully it can pass inspection.

It got down into the teens overnight, but the temps in both the utility room and bathroom were in the upper 40s!

Since Jim had to drive my car to the DMV, he had to come back in the afternoon to pick me up.  But even with all those interruptions, he still got tons done!

He worked in the auto bay this morning - all the fiberglass is in and it's ready for drywall!

Then he continued insulation work by moving up into the stairwell. He has the first layer of insulation in this area.  He still has to do the steel work here but things are getting closed up!

Jim has known that the man door in the metal shop came with a slight bend in it.  The door frame and opening are all straight but there is a bigger gap at the bottom of the door when it's shut.  So Jim wanted to try to see if we could bend it a bit.  He set up his fulcrum and lever (I got a short lesson on mechanical leverage to boot!).

Trying a different angle...  We got it to make a slight difference in the fit.  Jim wants to try working the top area tomorrow.

Next, we moved into the wood shop to put up another piece of drywall.  Jim's sliding the piece down the wall...

Cutting out the notch for the truss piece...

He had to take apart the receptacle but then he got the piece in place and he's cutting out the receptacle.

Putting the fasteners in...

The back wall is almost done - just one little piece left!  It looks so different when you walk in the shop and see this wall now!

Not much time left in the day, but Jim wanted to get a little taping done in the second bedroom closet.

Out of tape - we've gone through 750 feet of tape so far!

End-of-the-day - the main part of the closet is taped!

11.29.2017

Jim worked this morning wiring the new light box in the utility room.  We'll be able to start insulating and putting drywall in this area soon!

But most of his time today was spent in the auto bay.  He had to do all the steel work on the hip areas as well as finishing both bottom pieces.  Then he was able to do some fiberglass insulation.  This area is almost done!

Jim also worked outside this afternoon - he finished putting the soffit with vents in the areas he could.  There are just a few fill in pieces left.  He has to go to the roofing company to see what his options are.  He may just put some plywood in these areas until next year, just to keep things sealed up over the winter.

We wanted to put another piece of drywall up in the wood shop.  However, our big stack of wood was a bit too close to the wall and Jim couldn't get his drywall lifter under the bottom edge.  So we had to spend time rearranging and moving the pile a bit.

We moved the last stack over to the front of the pile and then Jim pushed everything a bit to stabilize it.

He had to first turn off the power to this area and take the receptacle apart.  Then with the wood moved, he was able to get the drywall up in place.  Here he's cutting the receptacle box.

Whew...he finally gets to sit down on the job for a minute!

Doing the rest of the fasteners - with the ladder on the wood pile.

This wall is really taking shape - one more full piece and then a partial piece!

It was late by this time but Jim wanted to do a little plastering.  First, we moved our plaster tools out of the closet and into the room - taping the closet will be next on the list.

Jim did a little plastering on the corners - in the second bedroom...

And on the valley in the kitchen...

Jim came home with me tonight - he took the plates off the newer 4Runner and is going to use my car to go to the DMV to switch the plates to the winter car.  Then hopefully he can get it inspected and we'll be good to go!

11.28.2017

Jim got a late start to his work day - he first had to visit the doctor to follow up on his kidney stone issues and get the results of the x-ray he had done last week.  Thankfully, everything is stable - he still has a stone in the other kidney that we're hoping just stays put!

After the doctor, he drove out to the  Drywall Center to pick up more foam baffles and insulation.  Once he got back, he got busy working in the corner of the auto bay.  He got all the holes drilled and new foam rafter tail baffles made and installed.  He got the very corner all stuffed with fiberglass.

Mid-afternoon, Jim switched to drywall work.  He got another piece marked and in place in the wood shop.  He had to shut off the power to the receptacle and take it apart - then do the initial cut for the box.

All in place and fastening...

After that piece was done, time to move up into the apartment.  Although we still have a bucket of plaster to use in the banjo, it was time to open our third bucket of plaster!  Here Jim is mixing it up...

Since the kitchen area is all taped, Jim moved back into the second bedroom to do the ceiling/sloped wall joint with the new tape...

All done!

There wasn't much of a day left, but Jim started working on plastering the corner in the kitchen...

End-of-the-day picture...He got the both sides of the corner done in the kitchen as well as at the top of the nook!

11.27.2017

It was more work in the auto bay this morning.  Jim put up the bottom angle piece on the front side.  Then he stuffed insulation in the area next to the inside wall and then was able to get two more pieces of drywall up!  He needs to make a trip to the Drywall Center for more baffles and insulation.

Then he did some electric work in the woodshop - he got the last light reworked and put the reflectors and bulbs in.

Next, we put up another sheet of drywall in the woodshop.  So nice that Jim and Kyle were able to get these back pieces against the back wall.  Jim first cuts the notch for the truss angle...

We got the piece in place and Jim is fastening it...

Jim had previously moved the access door jamb back out of the way so that he could use the Rotozip to cut out the drywall

All cut out and Jim is doing final fastening...

We then moved back up into the apartment and started taping in the kitchen...

Using the banjo for the last of the regular joints.

So the rest of the time we used the special tape for different angles...

Working in the nook area...

More angled joints...

Jim had to use two ladders to work on this angle in the hallway by the nook...

Jim decided to do this long angle connection in two pieces to make it a little more controllable...

Smoothing out the joint - this is the last taping in the kitchen!

Some end-of-the-day pictures - I love all these angles in the kitchen!
