6.13.2017

Today we got to move to a new section of the stairwell to start working on - the side by the double doors.  The first step was to clean the area from all the weather it's seen.  Jim then trimmed the house wrap to get a nice clean line.  He then used Zip tape to cover the transition of the house wrap over the trim for a good seal.

Next, he had to make and install side flashing pieces.

The first starter board is next...

Then it's shingling time!  Jim loved this - no scaffolding (well, it was in the way a bit!), no ladders - he could stand on the ground with all his tools within reach!

This is as high as Jim could go - there are going to be knee braces below the overhang so he needs to leave plenty of room to do that job.

Before we could move over to the rest of the wall, we had to do some backfilling.  First, Jim used some Zip tape to tape the seam of the dimple board to keep dirt out.

Jim wanted to buy the water line in a little more sand before we started...

Jim can't backfill this entire area because he needs to get some tubing set in case we need a water softener.  But now things are safer for the backfilling we can do.

I was on rock duty while Jim backfilled, making sure no rocks were next to the house or too close to the lines.

A little grading and we're good to go now.  Jim also made a swale to hopefully divert water over closer to the woods instead of next to the house if it rains.

He brought up some gravel to put close to the house to keep mud from splashing the house while we're working.

Only Jim would use a straight edge to draw lines to cut the house wrap a bit - but this perfectionist streak is why everything looks the way it does!

Trimming the house wrap...

Using the Zip tape to make a nice seal.

Everything looks clean and ready to go!

Drawing his stud lines...

While Jim was marking, I was picking up rocks that were in our hill and carrying them away.  When we had run-offs in the early spring, it exposed more rocks.  Jim wants to mow this area so we need to get protruding rocks out of the way.

At the end of the day, Jim started cutting some sheathing pieces for the overhang!
