2.17.2016 - Hip Rafter Up!

I had errands to do this morning - Jim came home at lunch and then we went back to the site together.  So I finally got to see the bathroom!  I love it - our first inside room is really taking shape!  Jim put the studs above the door frame this morning.

The outside of the bathroom is where the electric breaker box will go - Jim actually hung some electric boxes today!

It was colder today so all the slush froze - every place Jim walked yesterday was now solid ice.  We weren't sure if we would be able to do any roof work, but Jim was able to shovel off the landings.  There wasn't any real ice on them or on the scaffolding platform so we decided to see what we could accomplish.

Jim already had the remaining two main rafters cut.  Here he's getting the first out in the stairwell and in a position that he'll be able to work with.

Since I worked one side of the rafter, no pictures, but we got it up into place and Jim started fastening it down.

Fastening the bottom...

Next rafter ready to go up...

Both rafters are up!

Next, Jim had to make a mounting plate for the hip rafter.

Attaching the mounting plate...

Putting the clip angle up for the hip rafter.

These are obviously the biggest and most crucial rafters in the stairwell.  Jim got it in this temporary position and then got up on the scaffolding.  I was on the ladder on the landing.  We just took it slow and were able to walk the tail up the ladder and into place.

It's up and looks awesome!

Jim forgot that he needed to cut one of the flanges on the rafter - we definitely didn't want to bring it back down so Jim got out the extension cord and used his cut off wheel to cut it off.

Once he was happy with the fit, time to fasten it in place.

Fastening the top...

As the day wore on and got colder, all the wet surfaces started to freeze up again.  We were thrilled that we were able to get the hip rafter into place - that's key.
