2.20.2016

This was kind of one of those days - we got some good stuff done but kind of frustrating along the way - as only hip rafter work can be!

We were very thankful that all the snow/freezing rain/sleet that they promised basically amounted to just an inch or so of snow.  Then the temperatures warmed up - although most of the afternoon it was very windy and the sun was hidden behind the clouds so it didn't feel as warm as the temperature would lead you to believe.

Jim made the first small side rafter and finished up some details on the others this morning.  After lunch we got ready to install.  First step, putting up clip angles.

This side part of the roof will be the steepest pitch on the carriage house so the design is different.  There are so many things to take into account - and fitting all these rafters to the hip rafter is the hardest.  Plus Jim has to make sure that all the tails will be at the same position for when he puts fascia board on.  But this first one fit well.

Putting up the first rafter on the back...

Unfortunately, the hip rafter has a slight bend to it which definitely complicates things further.  Jim put a few screws at the top of the rafter connecting the two pieces, hoping that would stabilize things until he got more rafters up.

Jim then decided to make the next side rafter.  When you attach rafters to one side, then tend to push the hip rafter over - making the bend even worse.  He got it made and up in place.

Working on fit details...

Bringing up the next rafter...

Standing on top of the wall (yikes) while getting the rafter into place...

The roof is really taking shape!  However, Jim is still not 100% satisfied with the bend in the hip rafter.

He decided to try and winch the hip rafter and pull it into shape.

Trying to straighten out the rafter...

At the end of the day, the rafter is looking better and Jim is becoming more satisfied.  Since he's such a perfectionist, I'm sure the tweaking isn't done - tomorrow is another day!
