This morning, he did the finishing work on 2 more rafters - so now all 6 rafters for the front and back sides of the carriage house are done!
I went out to the site with lunch and the driveway was so icy that my car wouldn't make it up the hill. Plus, the tracks are so slippery that it was even scary coming back down. So I parked on the flat part of the beginning of the drive and walked up.
While Jim was working on rafters, I brought in the rest of the steel for the rafters that was in the yard. Now Jim won't have to dig through snow to find what he's looking for! That's not an easy task - each piece is cut to a different length so he has to find the precise one he's looking for.
Speaking of steel, in the afternoon we headed to the cold-formed steel place. Last week, Jim had ordered a piece that he needed to finish the other hip rafter and the rep thought he had it in the yard. Turns out he didn't, then he was off a day - long story short, he had to order another piece and it just came in today. Oh well...not like Jim has a shortage of things to work on!
Once we got back to the site, Jim wanted to put the track on the back of the hip rafter. You can see he put a plank up so that he would have a place to work from.
Bringing the track up...
...and setting it into place on the back of the channel.
It's tough trying to hold it in place and clamp it at the same time - all while perching on a plank up in the air!
Doing some fastening...
Jim put in enough fasteners to hold it all in place and did the ones that he could reach. It's going to be a challenge to reach the top ones - he'll deal with that later on.
At the end of the day, we had to redo some water control measures. The forecast is for another mix of rain, sleet and freezing rain - like we need more ice! Jim put the pieces of plywood back...
Then we got a big piece of plastic, unstapled the blue tarp and put the plastic underneath, and then stapled it down again.
Hopefully this will work better and keep more water from dripping into the lower shop.
