11.9.2015 - First Piece of Sheathing on the Main Roof!

As the saying goes, the Devil is in the details!  There were still lots of details to finish up today on the roof.

Jim decided to put strapping on part of the dormer roof section, going from the valley rafters to the blocking, in a V shape.  In order to reach this area, he had to put the step stool on top of the scaffolding - yikes!

Cutting off the excess with the grinder...

Getting the next piece into place...

Fastening it down at the bottom.

Jim had to work to make the strapping as taut as possible - then he fastened it down at the top and every intersection with the rafters.

The finished product....

Then it was back to work on end rafter blocking...

At least he could sit down for part of this job!

Just as Jim was finishing up the end rafter blocking, one of our neighbors from down the road came by on his ATV to check out the progress.  He hadn't stopped by since the spring, so there certainly has been a lot of changes for him to see!  He was very complimentary - kept calling it a masterpiece!  So that was nice - however, even a short visit takes away some of our valuable daytime hours at this point.  We used the break for lunch and then it was time to press on.

Jim wanted to finish up some more of the fastening details - there are some rafters that need to have all the rest of the screws put in.

Next on the agenda was the tip angle tying all the tails together.

Fastening the angle down...

Getting the next piece in place...

All done!

It was getting close to sundown, but we were determined to get a piece of sheathing on the roof today.  Jim put some temporary braces up high that we will use as we get further up with the sheathing.

Then he made some clips to hold the first piece of sheathing in place...

This may not have been pretty and I think Jim already has some thoughts in mind for a better approach, but Jim and I managed to get the piece of sheathing up onto the scaffolding so that he could put it into place.

Maneuvering the sheathing around all the rafters to get it into place...

Getting ready to set it down onto the clips...

Whew....first piece is sitting on the roof!

It's hard to tell from this picture, but the tip angle really worked well to make everything fit solidly against the sheathing.

Putting a few screws in to hold it in place...

Standing outside and fastening it down at the top.  Once we get in the sheathing business, Jim will have his harness on.  But we are so excited that the first piece is on!

The sunsets are gorgeous, but as soon as the sun ducks behind the mountain ridge, it gets really dark really fast!
