Today was all about sheathing...of course, after our first piece yesterday, Jim came up with a method to make it a little easier to get the sheathing on the roof.  He set up the scaffolding a little differently to allow for better access.

We first walked the piece over to the scaffolding - Jim lifted it up while I helped with a push from the bottom.  Then he was able to lift it up on to the next platform.

From there, he had to lift it through the rafters and get it positioned on the stops at the bottom.

Getting it into position and putting a few screws to hold it down.

Cutting the next piece - unfortunately, there will be a lot of cuts on this dormer roof section.  The sheathing extends past the rafters 4" on either side.

He fastened the end of the strap to the blocking...

This first course was extremely taxing for Jim physically.  He had to be in this crouched position the entire time, which is really hard on the knees (not to mention two surgically-repaired ones!).  To attach the screws at the bottom to the angle, he had to be in head down position - not good when you are over 30 feet in the air.   Plus it was really hard to get good leverage in this position to be able to get the screws through the sheathing into the steel.  And on this end, he had to do things with his left hand!

Don't look down!

The plan was to just get this first row in position and fastened with enough screws to hold it down.  However, Jim decided to put all the screws in now.  That way, he will be able to stand on this section when he does the next course without having to worry about it.  Plus, this is so difficult - it will be great not to have to face that later on!

Crouching on the tip of the sheathing, strapping himself in again.  Thankfully, this section isn't quite as steep as the auto bay - after this first course, he'll be able to stand and work on it without toe boards.

Cutting the last piece on the first course!

Lifting it up...

...and putting it into place.

Fastening the last piece down...

Time for the next course...

First piece into place...

On the auto bay roof, we used tongue-and-groove sheathing, which made everything fit together really well.  Now we have to use these H clips to provide the necessary spacing.  So when Jim first put the sheathing up, he clamped it down a little high so that he had room to put the clip in.

Then he released the clamp and the top piece of sheathing slid right into position.

Our first piece on the second course...

Putting up the next piece...

Fastening this course down is a little easier since Jim can stand (well, lean over) to put the screws in.  He doesn't have to be in a crouched position using only his arms - he can put more leverage in this way.

The roof is really taking shape!

The last piece was a 4' piece so a little easier to handle.  However, it was getting very dark by this point.

No end of the day picture since it was pitch dark by the time we were done!  So we cleaned up and headed home.  Jim certainly needs an evening of rest after today!

  1. So glad to see the roof sheathing going on before winter! Will be nice having everything under a roof soon. Big kudos to Jim for doing all this "high-wire" work.
