10.3.2023

Mom and I headed out to do her bloodwork before her physical next week, and Jim headed a different direction for a doctor appointment.  Once home, Jim got everything ready and headed outside.

He finished the seat cut into the corner beam and then put up the hip rafter to test it - perfection!

So he started cutting the next top cut for the opposite side - meaning he had to flip his design...

Done!

Another difficult aspect to these hip rafters are that they need a different angle bevel the entire way down the rafter, so that they are on the same plane as the front and side rafters for roofing.  Jim brought out his portable planer that he hadn't used in years to see how it would work.  We marked a chalk line and then he started cutting the bevel...

Working well...

Cutting the other side next...

Once that rafter was beveled, time to head up to the back beam and cut the other shoulder seat.  Measuring...

Chiseling...

Even more chiseling...

Once that cut was made, Jim brought up the hip rafter to test how the bevels would line up...

He was very happy...

He brought the rafter back down to finish the beveled edges...

The finished rafter.  He left the last foot of the shoulder cut plain so that it would be easier to put the pegs in.

Hauling it back up into place...

Temporarily strapping it down...

Then it was back to beveling the front hip rafter...

Done and moving it over to the pavilion...

Bringing up the rafter...

Jim was worried about these hip rafters, so he's thrilled that they are working out so well - looks perfect!

Time to put pegs in the back connection...

Pounding it in...

He put two pegs here...

After doing the back connection, Jim decided that he would cut the front beam before pegging to make it a little easier, so he took down the beam and cut it where he wanted...

We absolutely love this area, and apparently we aren't the only ones.  Wallet Hub just released their list of best small cities in America (population 25,000-10,000), and Saratoga Springs came in at #9 out of over 1,300 cities!  Hopefully that doesn't entice more people to move here - we love it just the way it is.  Check out the article here if you are interested.

High 82/Low 50.3 - beautiful!
