5.16.2017 - Water line in trench!

Jim worked this morning in the bathroom building the wall behind the shower. Of course, things are always a bit more complicated - it required blocking in the ceiling to attach the top track.

Jim made angle pieces to tie the corner walls together to make them stronger.

Right after lunch, we headed outside.  First job was to roll up the cut-off piece of 1-1/4" water pipe leftover from the line in the well that we had hoped we could use but it was too short.  This is not easy to roll up and keep it organized but we finally got it.

This will probably be too short to go from the well to the eventual house too but we'll keep it awhile to see.

Next on the agenda was to clean out the back corner to get to the conduit for the water line.  Lots of dirt has fallen into this corner so Jim had to use the pick to unearth the bottom of the dimple board.

It required lots of hand digging to get leaves and rocks that had fallen behind the dimple board.

But everything was in really good shape - including the conduit.

Putting the dimple board back into place...

Jim purposely left the very end of the trench a little high because he didn't want to risk digging with the excavator too close to the electric wires.  So he had some hand shoveling to do.

Burying our red warning tape over the electric wire.

Then we started to unroll the new wire - Jim is using 1" pipe from the well to the carriage house.

Unrolling....

Then I got down into the trench with the end and started walking it down...

You can just barely see a glimpse of Jim at the top of the trench unrolling more pipe - that's a long trench!

Ta da!  The line is going into the conduit and into the utility room!

More unrolling - this time the electric wire.

We had used this wire to go from the meter pedestal to the temporary box so most of it was underground and in conduit.  However, there was extra because Jim had planned to use it to power the pump so he had rolled the extra near the meter pedestal.  We always walk the length of the electric wire looking it over very carefully to make sure there are no gouges that could cause issues.  Near the end, we found a couple places where some rodent apparently chewed through the wire and part of the insulation!  So Jim used rubber and electrical tape to really seal that area just to make sure it's okay.

Then he taped the two lines together at a few spots to keep everything in place.

Then he got some sand and we put a good padding of sand around the lines.

After that, it was time to fill in with dirt!  And of course, making sure that there were no rocks close to the line.

We decided it worked best for Jim to shovel some dirt on top of the sand more carefully to make sure that there weren't any rocks and that there was a good thick layer on top of the line.

Then I stayed in the trench while he pushed dirt in so that I could get out any big rocks.

By the time I left, we had gotten quite a bit filled it!  Jim stayed awhile longer and did more grading so I'm anxious to see what it looks like tomorrow!
