10.24.2024

Concrete day started earlier than expected.  Jim got a call about 8:00 asking if they could come at 9:00 instead of 10:00.  Jim said to split the difference and come at 9:30, so he had to hurry through breakfast and get outside to get everything ready.  Setting up all the tools and equipment...

I didn't get a picture of this yesterday - this is the expansion foam piece he put on the inside just where the garage door will be...

Bringing up the power trowel...

Using the leaf blower to try and get rid of leaves....

It was about 9:45 when the concrete truck came up the driveway.  Jim had asked for the same driver as last time and thankfully he was the one who showed up, so he had no problem positioning the truck close to the shed area....

Getting ready to start....

And here it comes...

At this point, the driver put on another section of chute to get closer to the back so that Jim didn't have to push the gravel so far...

Continuing to work on placing the concrete...

At this point, Jim is feeling good - concrete all placed for the shed floor and starting on the pad.  However, as he worked on the pad, he was just a tiny bit shy of the concrete he needed.  The driver went up and scraped the chute and Jim was trying to get every bit out.

All that took time, so Jim had to start screeding the shed area...

Looking good...

You can see how we were just shy a bit.  This never happens - Jim is meticulous on his calculations when ordering, so it makes you wonder.  Jim had contingency plans - he was going to just place what he could and cut it off after it was hard.

But there were high areas in the shed and Jim was able to play around and get the pad area all placed.  Unfortunately, it just adds another stress level and added time to an already stressful pour!

Time to vibrate the concrete...

Using the screed on the pad...

Using the bull float...

Floating the other direction...

Floating the pad...

Yay - all placed, flat and looks great!

Rounding over the edges...

Of course, concrete work means lots of clean up work...

At this point, the concrete had to set up, so we were able to take a short breather and eat some lunch.  Then it was back out to do the power troweling...

Troweling the pad...

Doing the edges...

We used the broom to surface the pad, just like we did for the driveway...

One last time with the power trowel...

Success!  It looks so beautiful!

Cleaning the power trowel...

It took quite a while to get all the tools and equipment put away at this point.  At the end of the day, Jim got the concrete sealer out and started to spray...

Spraying the floor...

All sealed!

It was the perfect temperature to pour concrete - close to 20° cooler than yesterday, plus it's not supposed to freeze tonight so we don't have to cover it.  A very successful day!
