10.20.2024

The beautiful fall days keep coming, and we are so enjoying being outside working in this weather!

Today's task was to work on permanent placement of the skirting boards.  Because of the way Jim is going to attach them to the posts, he had to trim them a bit...

These two skirting boards have been removed...

When we used the laser level yesterday, Jim had marked locations on each post.  Today he used those marks to figure out the placement of the skirting board and marked that on the post...

He's going to inset each end of the board into the post, so he started off making cuts with the saw...

Then using his chisel, he cut out the notch, similar to the work he did on the timber frame construction of the pavilion...

First side done...

Making the cuts on the other side...

Cutting out the notched area...

We kept having to reposition some of the boards holding the position stable because they were in the way...

Starting to cut out the middle post...

Done and his test piece fits perfectly...

Removing the skirting board from the other side...

Jim had to do some digging to be able to get things positioned correctly...

Making his cuts on the back post.  This was not an easy job in the least - the saw is very heavy and Jim has to make lots of cuts, plus he's practically standing on his head to do the work!

Chiseling...

More standing on his head chisel work...

Putting the back skirting board permanently in place!

One side done!

Jim started working on the front post next, making his cuts...

Chiseling...

Working on the other side of the front corner post...

Putting the skirting board in place...

Fastening it...

You can see the back intersection of the posts and how the skirting boards are flush with the posts.  Looks amazing!

Jim cut both sides of the other front post and was getting ready to place the board...

Three skirting boards are in place and only one post left to notch out before placing the final one.  Fabulous day of work!

High 71.8/Low 33.8 - beautiful!
