Sure is hard to believe it's fall, although some of the cool nights we have let us know it's true. Along with that, we are starting to see color in the trees and a few leaves on the ground as well. We had such a beautiful summer - not so hot like most of the country dealt with - so we are grateful and hope it extends into a beautiful fall!
Jim did a lot of planing this morning - he got all of the pieces for the jamb extensions for the windows in the wood shop planed to the right thickness.
Then put the blinds back up - beautiful!
One of the jobs that has to be done before winter is to stuff insulation around the small opening between the rough opening of the window and the window frame. Since we already had the bed pulled out in the second bedroom, Jim decided to take care of that as well....
And he even does clean up!
Since he already had his mask on and the insulation out, he decided to do the other cantilever window as well.
Jim is continuing his preparation for the generator - he wants to make sure he has things as ready as possible to try and avoid the power being out any longer than it has to be. So today he took off the drywall in the wood shop to gain access to the conduit that currently brings all the power into the house.
Front panel off the breaker box for investigation purposes...
There was rain in the forecast today but we didn't get any until the work day was over. Jim wanted to get some grass seed down in the newly-graded area outside the stairwell. I did some overseeing over some areas along the upper driveway as well. He then took the Bobcat and compacted the seed into the dirt.
At the end of the day, Jim continued doing some hand digging of the trench for the generator...
Jim got a lot done today, surprising because we had a lot of distractions! This morning, we could hear people cutting down trees and it sounded so close. Close enough that we could smell diesel fuel from equipment. So we took a walk back in the woods and found evidence of activity, with trees down and tracks on the ground.
Walking back through the woods on our property, we were reminded of how beautiful it is. We look at our trees all the time but being down into the woods is a different feeling - one we haven't had much time to do with all the building priorities. Pretty humbling to see these gorgeous rock walls everywhere probably built by slaves hundreds of years ago...
Jim wanted to catch the people close to our property and just politely see what they were doing. So we were outside once and I heard them, motioned to Jim, who dropped what he was doing and ran into the woods...only to miss them. We even drove around the corner to see what we could figure out - we saw a piece of equipment but it didn't look like a real professional operation. None of this is on our property so we can't say anything but we'll definitely keep our eyes and ears open. That's why it's so nice to have 17 acres. The carriage house sits up on top of the hill and all the wooded property surrounds us. But we definitely don't want to see big timbering operations too close.
High 76/Low 54 - beautiful - light rain at the end of the day |
