2.29.2016

Happy Leap Day!

It was a drizzly start to the day and we reached our peak temperature of the day fairly early - it got sunny before lunch but was windy.  With the falling temperatures, made it pretty chilly.  We'll take it though - the forecast is for 3-6" of snow tomorrow evening into Wednesday!  Speaking of snow, in the paper over the weekend, our snowfall for the season has only been 10.3".  Really incredible for Upstate New York!  We have definitely been blessed this year - however, it's still been winter.  No matter what, it gets really cold working outside all day long.

Since it was drizzly in the morning, Jim did some inside work.  He first put up some steel pieces that he will use to eventually fasten drywall - another one of those have to plan ahead tasks.

Then he ran some more wire to power some boxes on the side wall.

After lunch, we started working on sheathing again.  Here Jim is fastening down the straight edge he uses as a guide to cut the angles.

Putting the piece of sheathing up on the wall...

Now that Jim is up on the roof, he's able to finish the last of the fasteners on the hip rafter.

Then he pulled the piece of sheathing up and into place...

Fastening it down...

Cutting the last piece for the back side!

Ugh...doing a little wall walking to get over to the back roof.

Last piece is up and into place!

After Jim got the top piece fastened, he got out the flashing tape and taped over the seams between courses to keep the water out until we can get underlayment on.

All the sheathing is done on the back!

I hadn't been up since Jim got the roof structure all built - it's a really cool space now!

Eventually this will be the view from the dormer window!

Jim had to put up another section of scaffolding on the front side.

First step for sheathing the front wall means cutting the angle for connecting all the tail pieces.

A close-up view of the way the angle fits perfectly on the tail design...

Once the angle was on, time for the first piece of sheathing!

Setting it into place...

The outside view of Jim fastening the sheathing down...

Next piece of sheathing is up and Jim is putting all the screws in this piece.

As always, it's my job to get the measurements marked on the sheathing, the cutting lines set, and all the screw points marked.

Fastening down the next piece of sheathing...

Taping the seam...

End-of-the-day shot of the front - looks so good!

2.28.2016 - Stairwell Rafters Finished & Sheathing Started!

It was a beautiful day - sunny and temperature reached about 50 degrees.  Of course, there was a brisk wind blowing which made it feel colder but it was still a glorious February day!

Jim worked a little bit more on the electric...he made this power cord that will allow him to plug into the power coming from the temporary pole.

These little red plastic grommets are cool - they attach to the steel stud and the wire is threaded through them.  That way the steel can't do any damage to the wire.

Jim put up some temporary planking from the upper landing to this piece of steel he attached to the other wall.  This will allow him to stand on while he is working on getting sheathing up on the outside.

He made another rafter this morning that goes on the top of the dormer frame - here he is attaching it to the structure.

Putting up the last main structural rafter in the carriage house!  There will be a couple temporary pieces in the dormer opening since Jim is making that right now, but the roof structure is now done!

A big grin and a thumbs up for no more rafters!!

That piece done, it's time to take down the scaffolding from the landing.

Such a clean look now that the scaffolding is out of the picture!

Jim had to put another section of scaffolding on top of the tower in the back so that we could start on sheathing!  The scaffolding just fit under the rafter tails - by only 1/8" inch!  Whew!

Jim cut angle to tie all the rafter tails together and installed it...

Putting up the temporary catch for the sheathing...

Marking each rafter where the sheathing will go to insure everything is perfectly straight...

Back to cutting sheathing!

Jim was able to put the sheathing up on the landing and then slide it out...

...and up into place!

I had to gather more toe boards from our pile to use on this roof section...

Then we got the next piece cut and Jim is putting it into place...

Then fastening it down...

This is the biggest piece for this section - it was tough to get outside.  First, Jim got it up on the landing...

Then he pulled it up onto the planks....

It was really tough getting it to the outside - it was hard to get enough of a grip on it to be able to pull it up - this is heavy wood!

But he got it up...

...then had to flip it around to get it in place.

Whew...mission accomplished!

Doing all the fastening...

What a red letter day - we are thrilled that the rafters are done and we are starting on sheathing!  We had to stop and get cleaned up for church, but we'll be back at it tomorrow!
