7.30.2024

Jim worked on cleaning up the saw this morning.  Obviously, parts aren't available for this old of a tool, so he has to be creative.  He bought a package of shower door rollers to replace the rollers underneath the turntable - it works much better now!

He's coming up with a table and guide to use for making the straight cuts on the steel to make sure everything is as precise a cut as possible...

Using the brake to bend the next section of hip trim...

He got the bottom flashing for the front hip done - it's even riveted in place...

Next design challenge - coming up with flashing for the very top where the hips meet the ridge...

Testing it out...

Then riveting the back flashing in place...

Putting up the tape...

Putting the Z-flashing on the top...

Perfect!  After this, he pushed both hip trim pieces up to the top.

That side done, time to move to the other side, which required a little scaffolding work...

Using the hip trim to mark locations of the flashing...

Cutting flashing pieces...

Starting to attach Z-flashing...

End-of-the-day picture - just two more small pieces to go!

7.29.2024

Mom had a doctor appointment and we headed to Saratoga Apple afterwards.  It's someplace I have been meaning to go to forever and just never did.  It's too early for apple season and it was too late for sour cherries, but we snagged a container of peaches - a pie is in the oven as I type this!

Jim worked on trying to come up with the bottom Z-flashing for the hips - and look how fabulous (and complicated!) this is...

It worked great though and the hip flashing slid over top.  The lines are where Jim will eventually cut and then hem to attach to the Z-flashing.  But he is leaving everything unconnected until after he gets the roof trim up to ensure that everything works together as it should.

7.28.2024

The steel roofing company didn't bend the hip angle to the measurement that Jim requested, so thank goodness he has a brake long enough to bend it...

Then it was back to work outside on the back hip to do the Z-flashing...

Measuring and cutting pieces...

Starting to put up the flashing in between the roof panels...

Continuing to work on flashing...

Working on the other side of the hip...

Time to put the hip trim up...

Amazing how this long piece can slide up both sides of the flashing, especially considering that the flashing is individual pieces.  That's where you have to be really accurate putting it up!

Jim still has to work on the very bottom flashing but both hip trim pieces are in place on this side!

7.26.2024

Jim started putting up the Z-flashing today.  It's quite the project!

There is a piece of Z-flashing that has to fit between each of the panels on the roof.  First step is to cut a special clay tape that gets attached to the roof...

Then the cut piece of flashing is put into place, and then Jim screws it down to the roof...

Doing a piece on the other side...

He made two wooden jigs for the different angles to mark where he needs to cut the end...

The main flashing pieces are all in place!

Jim has to figure out the bottom section, but just to make sure everything worked, he slipped on the hip trim.  It's hemmed on both sides and has to intersect with the flashing pieces to keep everything waterproof...

You can see each of the individual flashing pieces from the underside and how it all works together...

7.25.2024

We all had dentist appointments this morning, then Mom and I went to the military commissary again just to check out what they had.

Once Jim got home and ate breakfast, he cut the last little piece of roofing inside...

In the afternoon, he put it in place...

All paneling is officially in place!

The trim pieces are going to be a big challenge.  Just to start thinking about it, Jim temporarily put up a ridge trim piece.  Then he started working inside on figuring out the Z-flashing that will go on top of the panels, underneath this trim.  It's going to be a job!

He did some trimming to close out the work day.

7.24.2024

Jim worked on the computer this morning and then headed out to meet our insurance agent for lunch at our favorite spot, The Local.  Amazing that the insurance guy just asks Jim to lunch as a friend, not to sell him anything or talk insurance.  But some good news too - when Jim was there, he managed to get our names on the waiting list for the Mug Club!  We try every single time we go, and are always told that the waiting list is years long and they can't put anyone else on it.  So even though it's still years long, at least we have our names on it!

Our new bug spray concentrate came in and Jim mixed that up this afternoon...

He sprayed the posts as well as the roof again - hopefully we can keep the bugs away.

Jim did some investigating into the next steps on the roof, and then did some grass cutting before hitting the treadmill.

7.23.2024

Jim started taking apart some of the saw today to give it a good cleaning and overhaul...

Doing some clean up...

After lunch, we were back outside.  Jim got the first cut done on the center piece and then had to reset the saw to do the angles on the other side...

Putting up the middle piece...

Attaching the clips...

More cutting...

Putting up the next piece...

Working down the side...

Attaching the next piece...

Next to last piece!

Putting up the last piece...

Jim decided to hem this little piece while it was in place...

There's a tiny little corner piece on the front left, but basically all the roof panels are in place and it looks fabulous!

After doing all the cleanup, Jim did a little grass cutting to finish off the day.
