Today was the day to break through the side of the house to bring the air conditioning plumbing lines down! Of course, Jim meticulously planned this location to work with the length of the lines and the location of the condenser. Once he figured out the spot inside, he used the shop window as reference to get the right location. Since this is masonry siding, he had to be very, very careful not to crack the siding. He first used a masonry bit to drill through the first and second layers of siding...
Then he attached his really long wood bit to go all the way through the rest of the layers...
Now he had to make a hole in the siding big enough for the conduit. Again, no easy task with masonry siding. He first traced the siding so he had a hole size, then he made little holes around the circumference. He started using his masonry bit but it wasn't aggressive enough and was taking forever. So he sacrificed a wood bit, but he had to go in and sharpen the bit after every 6 holes or so.
Here's what it looks like!
Then he used the bit to "cut" out the spaces in between the holes...
Success - he's through the siding!
He put a sanding bit on and smoothed out all the edges...
A test fit with the conduit - perfect!
Most inventive use of a toilet flange ever - Jim is going to use it on the inside to make a good transition from the conduit. It has nice flared edges so it should make the plumbing go through easier.
He was able to use his hole saw to drill through the drywall...
Then through the sheathing from outside...
You can see daylight from inside!
Here's all the layers of the wall, from inside out - drywall, insulation, sheathing, house wrap, and two layers of siding!
Cleaning out the inside hole...
Drilling holes for the anchors to hold the flange in place...
Putting the anchors in...
Reaming out the inside of the conduit so that it's nice and smooth...
Next, putting the glue on...
Gluing on the toilet flange...
Putting it through the hole...
It's out! Then he marked the location flat to the siding where he needed to cut...
Perfect from the outside...
Then he fed the first grouping of two plumbing lines through the hole. The placement is perfect - we should be able to put the concrete pad and compressor just where we planned!
Mom had a nice shady spot to watch Jim! It was a gorgeous day - typical Camelot style, it rained overnight and brought in cooler temps.
