Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving! We try hard to be grateful every day for our blessings but it's a special reminder on Thanksgiving. Kyle and Julia are coming up from NYC later tonight so we will have our Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow.
These are a few rafter baffles Jim got yesterday - we'll probably use this combination. The plastic one has a neat flap that goes down over the wall to better channel air flow. Then we'll use the foam ones the rest of the way.
I stayed home this morning and did a few pre-Thanksgiving dinner preparations while Jim went back to wall building!
Here he's cutting the angle on the next wall stud...
And putting it in place...
Look at that - almost a complete wall! Jim will have to order more stud pieces - he had some bigger ones to get started. Now that we know sizes, he can get some cut to size.
Checking out our new wall!
Next we used the laser level to remark the front wall lines. Then we put glue down for the wood block underneath.
Putting it into place...
Then we fastened it down to the subfloor - actually, after Jim did the ends, I got to do the fastening!
Marking stud placement on the bottom track - then Jim predrilled holes to attach to the wood.
Then it was on to making the top track. The top will go all the way across to the end of the living room wall, where the bottom track stops at the doorframe. However, this piece of steel track is too long to bring down the stairwell, so Jim had to cut it upstairs.
Jim is making clip angles - he'll use these to attach the top track to the rafters.
We cut the first couple studs - the first is a double stud so Jim had to fasten it together.
Because the top track can't be fastened until after everything is in place, we had to start to build the wall on the floor.
Jim put a temporary brace in the corner to help stabilize the wall when we lift it...
It's in place! Unfortunately, the studs were maybe 1/8" too long. Rather than tear things totally apart, Jim was able to take down the end stud (not easy because it was fastened on the inside of the wall!) and replaced it with a stud the right size. Unfortunately, he'll have to take apart the double stud tomorrow, but he's happy with the fit now.
Putting another stud in place.
End-of-the-day - you can really see the room start to take shape!
You can't really tell from this picture, but for most of the afternoon we had such a small gentle snowfall - just enough to coat things and make them holiday picture perfect!
