11.16.2016 - Electric Inspection Passed!

We had much to celebrate today - starting with our electric inspection!  This inspection was to inspect that Jim had used the correct service wire and ground and that it was put in the trench correctly.  We were hoping that our sand didn't wash away from our rain yesterday afternoon, but all was fine.  Jim did spend a little time this morning working inside the meter box.

When the inspector came, he said everything with the trench was great and he gave us a nice shiny sticker for our meter box.  We can now backfill the trench - all great news.

But he also came inside the carriage house to fill out the paperwork (yes, so we can pay him for a whole new inspection contract because it had been 2 years - ugh).  While he was there, he looked over the panel box and the way Jim had the woodworking shop wired.  Jim was apologizing for the breaker box because he has the temporary power hooked up and the inspector laughed - he said the box looked better than most that he sees on a final inspection!  Jim explained how he was taking the power to the subpanel in the downstairs shop and he said all of Jim's plans were great.  He did tell us something interesting - the code changed as of October and we will now have to have all tamper-proof receptacles in the apartment.  Good to know and glad we hadn't started that.

This was a big block to have checked off - even the guy who dropped off the cable on Monday said that electric inspectors usually find fault with everything.  We're all good to go!

The rest of the day was spent working on shingles - and it was another celebration point on that front too.

Although it means we're making progress, Jim is up high enough that he now needs to work off a ladder on the scaffolding.

Jim spent quite awhile working on a flashing design for the ridge.  This is another one of those areas that Jim really had no clue how he was going to make all this work - especially since the roof can't be finished until the siding is complete.  He needed to make a piece of flashing that would go over the ridge - but the ridge is very complicated because it has the ridge vent and ridge shingles on top, which of course aren't installed yet.  But he came up with this design...

Doing the soldering...

Jim has to fit the flashing underneath the house wrap.  Instead of fastening it to the side of the house, he is leaving it loose at the moment since the ridge isn't finished.  He'll fasten it to the roof when the time comes but it allows him to be able to maneuver a good fit once he's working on the roof.

Fitting it over the ridge...

Using a piece of ridge shingle to make sure the design will work.

Once he was confident about the flashing and it was in place, it was time to mark for the next courses.  Again - you can see that the two sides match up totally perfect - even though we started this side from the front side of the stairwell and carried the pattern all the way up to the west wall!

Attaching the top window frame...

Attaching the shingles that to up to the ridge.  These are really close up pictures - I'm inside at the window while Jim is working underneath the scaffolding on top of the roof!

Working on the start of the next course...

Jim is beyond thrilled that he is pretty close to having this ridge area shingled.  The next courses, while high and behind scaffolding, will be more straight forward.  This ridge area has worried him for awhile.  No end-of-the-day picture - it was too dark by the time we came down from working on the shingles.

We are thrilled about the accomplishments today - definitely lots to celebrate!
