3.20.2016 - Doors and Shingles!

Happy First Day of Spring!  Although the temperatures didn't quite reflect that, we are thankful that we didn't see any of the snow that was initially forecast to hit today.

Quite a lot to report - and since I didn't update the blog yesterday, today is a catch up of all the exciting accomplishments!

The outside double doors are now installed!  Jim has one more sidelight glass to install but it's a fully-functioning and lockable set of doors.  Now, Jim can lock these doors and no one has access to any part of the carriage house interior.

Work continues on the woodworking shop wiring.  All of the receptacle boxes are now installed.

This is more completed wiring to receptacles on the back wall - including more drilling of studs and installation of conduit.

Grading continues as well...the upper driveway is really taking shape.

In fact, in order to work on the driveway, Jim had to move the pallets of siding.  These bundles are so heavy that the Bobcat could only lift two bundles at a time!  He also moved some of our excess steel over too.  All that remains is some lightweight steel that we used initially for the temporary wall in the downstairs shop - when we get time, we'll move that into the truck.  Jim eventually wants to try and sell it.

The accomplishments keep coming...today was our first shingle work!  This is so exciting - this is one of the first FINAL pieces of the carriage house!  Jim wants to get the membrane covered on this side because it will be the last side to be finished because of the dormer roof.  Covering the membrane with the shingles will protect it from the UV rays of the sun.

Jim can use his roofing nail gun for this job - with stainless steel nails!

This is the starter row...

Working up...

Continuing on...

These shingles look SO amazing - they really look like slate.  Jim is so happy with the quality - he's used composite shingles before but these are far superior.

Working down the side...

Main area all finished for this section!

Next Jim had to make a jig so that he can easily cut the right angle for all the ridge pieces.

Installing the first cut piece...

Working on the next ridge piece...

End-of-the-day picture - door installed and shingles started!
